67-68 CHEVROLET Hood letters, help! There loose!

67-68 Hood letters (used) not going back onto the hood without being 'loose'.

I was missing some hood letters so i nabbed some at the junkyard. Well, some of them went on and snugged down, while others wouldnt tighten up. I hate to buy new ones (they are $$ and look too good for my old truck). What can I do to get these ones on, and be able to get em off oneday so I can paint under em? Thanks!

Interested in this myself. I'd suggest putting a dab of silicone on then snug them down. Atleast that's what I've been thinking when I do mine, unless something better comes to light here.

ME TO! the h is the only good one on mine the rest are some what snug or loose to the point where they can go aroundy round....it is probably because the screw marks on the letters are eaten up to bad and therefore can t be screwed in all the way fella either glue em or buy new ones that is the fait i will have and the rest of us!

I'll have to look at how they are attached. Is the clip bad or is those tin nuts? I got ideas. I'll go look at mine

Re: 67-68 CHEVROLET Hood letters, help! There loose!

Yeah they have nuts.

So new nuts will fix the problem

What exactly are they called then, tin nuts? Where could I get some? Thanks!

Just looked at mine they are held with tin nuts. I would go to the hardware store and get some of those push on thin sheet metal reatiners. Like these

Put the nut on your workbench and tap around the hole with a flat punch and make the hole smaller and then try. (flatten it out) Doesn't take much unless the studs are worn really thin. Hope that makes sense.

Re: 67-68 CHEVROLET Hood letters, help! There loose!

When I took my Camaro scripts off, the stamped nut had a gob of the same stuff they used to seal the seams.
It acted as a washer, making the stamped nut tighter to the inside of the body panel, and also sealed the hole on the inside, keeping water from settling in the hole, and not giving rust a place to get a toehold.

When I took it out to restore the car, the nuts were loose on the script stem, so I replaced it with a chalking gun.

Failing all the above solutions, I always use 3M double sided sticky tape cut to the outline of the letter. Moosh that thing on there and it's good.

I wish I had knew about this before I bought new letters. And yes, the are kinda pricey.

Good Luck!
