firestone air bags

I've been searching and cannot find if anyone has installed the firestone air bags in the rear of a 66 series C10. I had them in a newer dodge dually and loved them for towing.

I've found plenty of info on dropping the suspension with air bags but nothing for the basic bags for the back.

Did you fab your own brackets or did an existing kit work? They don't have a kit for the early 60's trucks that I can find.

Is your truck a coil spring truck, if so it is very easy, I bought my air bags from Air Bag it, some here trash them but I have had no problems. I bought the 8" bags for 160.00 (4 bags) The brackets for the rear are $129.00 and $129.00 for the front..........I only did the rear air ride and am saving the other bags for a 65 chevy that is my next project. I figure I can grow the air ride to a more complex control system as I can afford it.

They were easy to install and gave me the ride and ride height control that I was after. I am planning on dropping the 65 chevy in the front and rear and will go with bags all around on it. Thiss 66 GMC is going to be a daily driver so I wanted to keep it simple.

Is this what you're referring to regarding a rear air spring application? I'm currently running the Firestone 6873 springs out back.

That is sweet! I was thinking of replacing the coils with the firestone air bags that are used in hauling to help balance the load. Like I said above I have used a similar bag on a heavy duty one ton dodge truck. They were really easy to install with the provided brackets. I can't find a set right now with pre made brackets. So I guess a good set of bags with brackets would work just fine.

I"m going to be pulling a trailer and don't want the springs to sag. I also have noticed the front end sagging a little bit with the 350 engine in it and want to address that as well.

Re: firestone air bags

When I bought my truck there wasn't any kit on it. Just a c-notch kinda, and bags replaced where the springs were.

My buddy that had the truck just drilled holes in the frame and in the arms for it to bolt to.

I didn't have any problem lifting or lowering at all.

There are several vendors on here that sell rear kits. Porterbuilt is one. He can answer anything you might have about it.

CPP sells kits too.

You can check out my build thread to see pics of it. I dont recommend to do it like my truck was in the rear. You need a spacer between the bag and frame or it will rub. I just wanted to show you what not to do. But it did ride good.

Thanks...you can get the upper mount bracket from vendors, such as Porterbuilt, Ride Tech, etc. (mine are actually a RideTech) - 63-72 rear trailing arm air spring mount kit. I run the Slam Specialties air springs up front. In addition to that spring's internal bump stop feature, I also use a longer lower control arm bump stop just in case of an air system failure (I run a Pontiac and 4L80E trans, so I'm pretty heavy up front).

I just found this at Brothers. Does anyone have this kit installed on their truck?

Re: firestone air bags

that kit would work, but it wont allow you to be able to change the ride height of your truck. It's meant to be used with the stock springs to help carry a heavy load.

X2...it's a helper spring/air assist kit. But, it sounds like this is similar in function to what you mentioned in your original post about the system on your Dodge dually.
