The revival of a tool box
Even though the tool box is gone on my truck, I have acquired one to put in. It is however in bad shape. So this weekends starter project is to disassemble and make a new one!

pics coming! I got it apart so when I get home I will photograph it! Call it the making of a new door...this one is done so I decided it would be easier to make a new outer panel and cut out and transfer the stamping for the handle and lock and re-build the inside where all the hinges and brackets go as nobody is going to look inside. It will be ok but not perfect where the outside needs to be nice looking...damn rust!

I was thinking of making a new door for the tool box i got.But I was going to have it all smooth "shaved",and have a cable inside of the cab to open it like a big trucks dogbox.
just an idea

So, cut box door in two pieces. outer shell and inner door which has the attachments.
Heated and removed broken bolts and sanded down to see how bad it is. Going to cut out the rust in the corners and remake those ends, but all the bolts are out. Cut out the stamped center where the handle goes. Got an old Oldsmobile hood and cut out a new piece for the outer shell. (Thought I should stick with GM so the truck does not reject the transplant.) Cut and bent the edge so it can be rolled over inner panel and panel bonded to seal and insulate from weather. Welded handle pocket into flat panel which helped put the roll of the body into the panel. Looks good with minimal body work to do. Next fix rust on inner panel and fiberglass repair box bolt holes and 3" hole in back corner. Here are the pics so far. |

So after chemical treatment of rust, I have made a small patch panel to go into corner. Will have to dolly it into shape and then weld in. The last pictures are of my certified welding instructor checking out the work.

Wait till you see the bedside! I have a NOS longhorn right bedside with no opening for the box. So I am going to use the woodgrain moldings to "locate" the opening for the box and cut it out and then work the bedside to resemble the stamped opening. A bedside tool box could not be found, but a 41 year old new one should do the trick with a good bit of hammer and dolly work. Pictures to follow when the patches are welded in.
