Need an honest answer
The guy who is rebuilding my 51 chevy frame seems to take a good time. Can anybody give be a good idea how long it should take in hours to:
1. layout/setup the frame 2. tag all parts to place 3. sandblast 4. finish welding 5. prime and paint frame I used a picture from a website which is very close to what mine should be. Any feedback will help me to see if he was right.... |

Re: Need an honest answer
I think how much he's getting paid per hour would have somthing to do with how much time it would take.

Re: Need an honest answer
6.7 - parts=$$$/shop rate +or - 15-20% I think would be close. I really have no idea. But I would like to know what people think also. I think I would have asked for a bid.

Re: Need an honest answer
Is he building you a whole new frame, or just putting a crossmember and 4 link in yours? The one in the pic looks like all new steel...

Re: Need an honest answer
I can't give you total hours but I spent 2 years from the date of my first post until we had the frame in paint. The only thing is I usually only work 1 day a weekend and for only about 3-4 hours. Some weekends I don't even work on the truck because my dad has other things he needs help on. I didn't build a complete frame though I boxed ours and did the mustang 2 front setup. I have several pictures on my build thread if you want to look at them and if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

Re: Need an honest answer
I would have asked for a set price at the start. He would have to calculate how many hours he figured it would take and give you the price in writing and stick by it. Any changes asked for on your part would cost extra.
Otherwise you are paying for his time every time he stops to answer the phone, go to the can, talk to a visitor or sign for the UPS shipment of the day. Some will disagree with me but I worked flat rate for about 20 years all together and the customer always knew what he was going to pay from the start. It didn't matter if I beat the flat rate which usually happened in my case or it took me double the time the book said it would which happened a few times the fee was set and didn't change. The guy who I am planning on having build the frame for another project has given me a set price for the frame with the things I want on it. It doesn't matter how fast or slow he works on it as long as I get the product his reputation says I will in the end. |
