Re: Oil pump screen installation

I like 3/8" clearance tween the pickup & the pan, & I dont like press tubes. I have only seen 1 fall on the street, ....but it cost the dude a fresh motor.I like to sand a little clearance on the tube , for a snug but slip fit, then set the depth, pull the cover off as well as remove the spring & bypass. I dont tack weld.....warm it up with a torch, & weld the tube solid with a nickle rod in your stick welder. After it cools, resurface the cover, clean & reassemble. its for sure a little overkill, but I have run the same (Z28 pump), on 4 or 5 fresh motors, with nothing but a resurface & end play check(.0025 on the end play should get you there). Re: Oil pump screen installation

I have never seen a pressed pickup come out unless a) it was a used pickup and/or pump or b) it was not installed correctly.

If someone's worried about it, it's a lot less work to just buy the Melling Select pump for a few bucks more with the bolt-on pickups. A quick braize is also fine if you feel like you gotta.

Re: Oil pump screen installation

I got an engine for free that was practically brand new because the pickup fell out of the pump. The last pump I installed the pickup practically fell into the pump. This was a 98 tahoe with vortec engine. All brand new melling stuff. I always run a good tack weld and they wont ever move. Just makes me feel better.
