hooking up the 4L60E

I have my wrecked 97 GMC with good engine/trans, etc. I have my 69 stepper with a new engine but needing a trans. So I've been thinking about using the good trans from the 97. It has to have a controller so I've looked into aftermarket units and frankly they are too expensive for me. I cannot see spending well over $1000 just to make my used tranny operational. Is there anyway to use the factory stuff and rewire it to work? I've done a lot of thread searching and haven't come up with anything yet.
I have never wanted any electronics on my 69 but I want to keep the 4.10 gears so I've been considering the OD and since I have a good one already..

There is no way that I have heard or seen to do what you want w/o some controller of some sorts.

I would go for the trade if it were me.

I thought that the 4L60E was the same transmission as the 700R except that it was computer controlled and they have the same case.

Re: hooking up the 4L60E

I thought you could use a diesel controller from mid 90s truck on this? I've not done it myself though.

Use a full manual valve body.

Re: hooking up the 4L60E

I remember mention of using a diesel trans controller in a thread a couple of years back but none of the particulars.
The thing is using the 4l60E you have to use a throttle position sensor along with a trans controller to make it work. Then there is the electronic speedo converter you have to buy also. Whereas the 700R4 has a TV cable and the only electrical is to the brake switch and lockup torque converter. Earlier 700's had speedo cable instead of the electronic pulse sensor. I think it would actually be a better choice for on older vehicle using a carb'd engine, costwise.
Manual valve body? I'm not sure how that would take the place of the electronics.

Re: hooking up the 4L60E

If you don't mind doing the work, here is some info on building your own controller for the 4L60E/4L80E transmissions.

This thread was hijacked from it's original posting....

http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=403384

Here is some more info......

There is more, you just have to search a little. Those will give you an idea what is involved.

And of course, as already mentioned you can use the OEM controller from a diesel truck that had a 4L80E
