At what mileage would you consider a rebuild neccesary on a LS?

If it were me, the use of it, history and probably anything over 150K would be a candidate.

for instance, if it had 150K miles on it and I was going to use it for a DD, then I probably wouldnt if it looked good inside.

if it looked even questionable at 50K, and I wanted it for a DD, I would rebuild it.

Saying all that, I know of some trucks with 5.3 and 6.0's with 260K miles and still going strong, because they were/are well cared for.

250k is no sweat. The shop truck has 120k on the factory plugs. Jay

I just want to know what to look for when I buy my motor. I am going to try and find something in the 50-75k range so I don't have to rebuild and I can put that money towards other stuff for the truck.

Try to pull a valve cover and look for any signs of neglected oil changes, see if they'll let you bring a leakdown tester and check for ring/valve seal. If it holds compression and looks fairly clean then it's likely good to go.
We have a local guy that pulled a 150k mile 5.3 out of a junkyard and put it in a gutted RX7 with a 78mm turbo. The only changes he made to the engine were LS9 head gaskets, head studs, cam & pushrods. That little car went 8.95 @ 154mph shoving ~20psi down it's throat.....and that old junkyard 5.3 hasn't skipped a beat!

what area of the country do you live?

LKQ has motors ( 5.3) with little mileage for $1500 or so.

I live in NC but I am in Afghanistan right now. I am looking for a 6.0l and I want to get one before I come home. I have a few emails out to find some more info on a few motors.
