this is interesting...did this truck come like this?

Not mine, but someone may want to see it.

http://stlouis.craigslist.org/cto/2234553832.html

doesn't look like a bad price if you want to go camping.

Re: this is interesting...did this truck come like this?

Yes,it came like that. In fact,GM had an arrangement with Open Road and these could be ordered direct from the GM. There were many companies building this type of camper, available for any brand truck. But,the others were either ordered by the camper companies from GM as cab 7 chassis, then upfitted, and sold through RV centers or a feller could order the truck, then send off to camper company.
I wish I could buy that one.

Re: this is interesting...did this truck come like this?

Sometimes they hacked a passageway between the cab and the camper through the back of the cab.

Wish I could buy it. I'd leave the pop-up parked or pull it along as a condo

If I had to guess, the window is probably open to the camper....

Sure is tempting. If gas was still $2 a gallon I would consider having a good look at the truck.

There is a truck exactly like this one that I pass all the time on my way to Dallas. I would love to have it. Very cool

how bad-a$$ would that be with some billet wheels, bumper in the weeds on airbags and then park it in the infield campground at Talladega for the spring race!

Re: this is interesting...did this truck come like this?

Open Road had a factory in Redondo Beach, CA.. I saw a ton of those things growing up. They came in about 3 different lengths, the smallest was on a C-20/C-2500 chassis, the longer ones were on a 1 ton dually chassis. Many had the back wall of the cab removed and bucket seats (and a suburban fuel tank, I think). I have even seen '67 and '68 Open Roads on GMC chassis with 351 V-6's. The big one also had a really neat fold down patio in the rear.

Re: this is interesting...did this truck come like this?

Several rv manufactures around the country built similar rigs and they were either sold at RV dealers or the truck dealerships.
There is one on a Chevy chassis sitting about ten miles from me that has been in the same spot for over 30 years.

Wasn't there one with sliding doors in back? I was thinking that would make a cool toy-hauler type of conversion. Turn it into a ramp door and wheel the bike in.

Re: this is interesting...did this truck come like this?

Yes,there was and Bob B mentioned it. It was Open Road's top-of-the-line. I added a picture from a Chevy brochure in my prior post. It's an El Dorado, not an Open Road. These things are cool just as they are. I can tell you 1st hand just how cool it is to roll into a campground in a good looking classic Chevy truck camper. My kids grew up traveling in one. There are so many dimensions to enjoyment of these trucks many have not had the opportunity to realize. That's the beauty and attraction of trucks to me. By their very nature they are totally versatile,so they can be applied to many pleasures in life. I'd roll up to some off the most beautiful campgrounds in my $3,000 camper with $50-100k rigs and feel like a king. The woman who ran the campground on the North Rim of The Grand Canyon was very impressed with my rig. She told me it was one of the nicest campers she ever saw. And,she was an elderly woman who had run that sight for decades. If anyone gets a chance, they should buy one. I want another so bad it hurts. Having the back of the cab cut out would be a great enhancement. That's one thing mine lacked.

You can tell in the first pic on the ad that there is a cutout in the cab:
