01' Sub. 1500 5.3 4wd mileage ?s

Does anyone have any feedback on improving mileage with one of these trucks? I'm considering a programmer, CAI, catback, etc. Anything to pick the mileage up some. This truck gets 12.3 mpg in mixed driving and, from what I've read and heard, some of these trucks are getting close to 20 mpg on the highway and 16-17 in mixed driving. Anyone have any ideas or input?

Re: 01' Sub. 1500 5.3 4wd mileage ?s

On my last truck the only things that improved mileage a considerable amount were a custom tune(solid 2mpg) and E-fans (1mpg). The plug in programmers I have experienced never came close to a custom tune in anyway. There are plenty of companys offering mail order tunes that will work great on a mostly stock setup. The E-fans were just stock e-fans off of a LS1 Camaro wired to be controlled by the PCM.

Is there anywhere on this site that shows where to wire the fans in so the pcm controls them. I havent seen anything like that and wasnt real sure it could be done.

Pondscum, your PCM as it comes from the factory is not set up for controlling E fans. It needs to be tuned in order to use it for fan control. Here are the wiring diagrams, but I bought my harness pre-made ($100ish).

99-02 There is also a 2 relay version, but it seems to be VERY hard on relays.

With my 00 Sierra RCSB 2wd w/ a 5.3 im getting around 18 to 19 mpg with a Hypertech programmer, dual exhaust (cats removed), and air intake box cut out. Proly have longtube headers on by the end of summer hopefully that will help also.
