Something a little different!

Well my son is in Cub Scouts - and we are having our first Pinewood Derby - my son wanted me to do a car with him - so of course I went with a 72

We found the lights on line and it still makes the weight - We'll see how she runs tomorrow??

Re: Something a little different!

Hey, let me know if your interested in how to make that pinewood derby car very fast (and legal by scout rules) I've probably helped my sons make like 10 of them, they usually won or came very close, also won the district a few times... And i made my sons help and do a lot of the work themselves

I shouldnt even comment. However, that's not in my nature. Teach them to do the best they can on anything they do. Don't teach them to do anything halfway...

Re: Something a little different!

Nice job good luck , you might want to weigh it to see that you are at the max add weight if need be. Smooth out the nail heads where they meet the wheel and smooth out the bumps on the wheels that should make it pretty quick I'm sure there is a ton of other stuff I don't know about most of all have fun

Re: Something a little different!

My son and I raced them, too. His cars became the one to beat when I used a little bit of advice. One of the biggees is to essentially chamfer the wheel tread so that there is very little of the tread riding on the track. Just imagine that a head-on view of the tire will reveal a shallow "V". The other thing (for us) was the use of graphite on the "axles". If your weight is the maximum, it is all you can hope for...minimal contact on the track, well-lubricated (graphite) axles and maximum weight.....

Re: Something a little different!

Thanks guys - I will let ya know how we do. I took it to the "weigh-in" tonight and it is the MAX - 5.0 ounces!!! I polished the axles and used a little graphite too, so we'll see. He is very excited! He is 8 and after the weigh-in he said "I wish I could build a time machine and see who win's"! I told him we worked hard on the cars and we did our best. So the we'll see.

I will keep ya posted - thanks again for the comments.

Re: Something a little different!

That's pretty cool ! I was a scout leader for 6 years, had some good times with my son. We are now re-doing the 69 that I bought.
The adults used to joke that you want to keep them interested in scouts before they get interested in perfume and / or car fumes.
In our troop we had best in show after the races. So you could get an award for the best design and most original design. It would take us about 4 hours the weekend before the finals racing each other in the dens to qualify. We had about 70 scouts and we tried to do round robin qualifying in the appropriate age bracket. And then at the troop / pack meeting we would have the finals. Not sure who had more fun the boys or the adults.
