366 dumptruck motor in my 62 Panel

Got a strong 355 in her now with a mild cam...Would putting the 366 in it be worth the trouble of the swap to a big block. Also doing 86 Sub susp. swap to get all the upgrades in one shot. Found some info on hoppin up a 366 online.

I say no, unless you are into spending more money to make less power. It's only 11 cubic inches bigger than your small block. Just my opinion.

A decent 355 will out perform a 366 any day of the week and get a lot more mileage at that. I wouldn't mess with it if I were you.

Absolutely not worth the effort to swap in a 366. Those are tall deck truck engines built for low rpm power, and the 366's even lacked that. If you want a big block go with a 454, 427 or even a 396 from a passenger car or light truck.

A friend of mine had a 366 and wanted to hot rod it so we came up with a combination where we used 292 chevy rods and 383 pistons bored it to 4.00 and adjusted the stroke so the piston was .010 above deck and it ran like a champ ..........

The only problem with that Awbrown would be he can pick up a late model big block running with what he would be paying out in machine work, price of big blocks are cheap...

How do you "adjust" the stroke?

We do a lot of stroker combinations for folks on everything from 2.6 chryslers to stovebolts to nailhead buicks , you name it we have stroked it .. On any combination you have to do some math .. deck height minus 1/2 of the stroke ,the rod length and compresion height of the piston ..

Example , the 366 is a 10.200 deck , the stroke is 3.766 , the rod length of a 292 rod is 6.758 (average they do vary ) and a common 350 chevy piston is 1.540-1.560 depending on manufacturer.. half of the stroke on a 366 would be 1.883 plus rod length ,6.758 plus compression hgt of the piston 1.550 average equals 10.191 , meaning it will be .009 down from deck .. if the components don't stack up more than .010 or so out of the deck it will work , you just need to confim you have piston to valve clearance and your good to go... cost to do it , pistons and rings 110.00.. 292 rods ,your on your own here , and grind the crank on stroke 120 , to offset grind runs 200 (you actually widen the bbc to 2.075 because the 292 rods are wider)..plus balance and bore job (all regular rebuild expenses...) you can destroke a 454 crank to 3.940 and use 292 rods and a KB744 piston and it gives you a 396 that has a very light bobweight...... So a 366 may be useless in its stock form , but they are far from useless when you use your imagineation.. Thats what hotrodding is all about ..
