Rusty nuts bolts and misc small parts

Ok so the deal is here that i soaked a coffe can full of rusty nuts and boltd in vinegar for a few days.. then i filled up the jug with wAter and agitated them till all the rust came off.. that was the easy part.,... once the rust was clen i threw them in the oven so they copuld dry fast.. .. they rusted within 5 minutes .. my question is... How the heck do i keep the rust of.. I could soak them in some oil, butt i like to keep my vehicles clean and i degrease and wash out my entire truck everytime i wash it . Do i rattle can it ? I understand that I can just buy new ones , but im just curious as to the best way to "restore" old nuts and bolts.............

The best way is to have them replated. I've done 2 frame offs and had all the nuts and bolts (original ones) replated. It cost about $90 bucks per car for three to for different platings. You only want to do that if you need the correct fasteners. For every day driver usage I would just rattle can or replace them.

The only problem with the Caswell stuff is there shipping is high. $35 for the small bottle of blackener concentrate & one pint of sealer but the shipping is $16... That puts it over 50 bucks for 1.25 gallon of blackener and a pint of sealer. If you lived close enough to pick the stuff up it would be great.

After the vinegar bath try washing the parts in a baking soda solution that should kill the acid in the vinegar, then rinse in clean water. Put them in the sun to dry and coat them with paint or whatever you are going to use right away. A little flash rust wont hurt anything.
