Re: size question
In a truck that isn't chopped an has a stock seat you should be ok but the best thing is to sit in a couple before you get too far along on buying one or buying one for a project truck.
The bottom drawing should give you the elbow and head room measurements. Last edited by mr48chev; 03-07-2011 at 11:42 PM. |

Re: size question
I'm not as big as you are. I'm 6'3 or so, and 230ish. Anyway, I felt pretty cramped in a '50 when I bought it. I ended up tearing the thing apart, so I pulled the gas tank from the cab and put it in the back under the bed. This obviously allowed me to relocate the seat further back from the steering wheel. It's a lot better now, but it's not a full size trucks worth of room by any means.
If you plan on running around town for a bit of fun you should be fine. If you plan on making it your daily driver or using it for long trips, you might get a little cramped up if you don't change things around. |

Re: size question
Agree... I'm 6'2" 230 and the steering will is pretty close. I would bet your belly will be right up in the wheel..(no offense meant) I second the take the gas tank out and find a thin backed seat to slide back further. Head room is not an issue what so ever.

Re: size question
Move the tank, and swap the seat for an 88-98 chevy bench seat and you will fit just fine. A buddy rode around with me last year and drove the truck some, and he's 6'9" and 250.

Re: size question
I'm not big but I used these 3rd row Yukon seats (relatively skinny) with a telescope column. In the pics I weighed 175, now 160 and still dropping. I pulled my tank too.
EDIT added pictures showing the frame, flip and fold. the seats and back only have one location in the upright position so i made the frame adjustible. They fit side by side, good for two adults. There is a center lap belt so you can squish your kids and friends.

Re: size question
I edited my original post above to show the final install, did not have the pics on the other computer. They don't recline I set up the frame so I could adjust it.

Re: size question
5'6" on a good day, my wife is 5'7" so it will work for both of us. I don't like the wheel close, in the photo I was simulating having my left arm on the window sill (tape line) to set seat height and steering location. The seat frame ended up about 5" above the floor, you could drop it if you are taller to gain more room. I tried to get the seat itself close to the stock dimensions, I set the tilt angle based on my wifes SUV since that is the one we use for our long distance road trips and I know it is comfortable.

My dad has a 55 F**d and he is always complaining about the leg room in that. In fact he is planning a 12" stretch when it comes time to redo that truck (10 years now since we originally put it back together, as novices!) Honestly, it also comes down to how bad you want it! Kinda like my old motorcycle... I put up with its crap for a long time cuz I really wanted it! I know that isn't much help! Also, if there is a build on here somewhere of a 55-59 body style on a late an 89-99 body where he used the firewall and cab floor of the new truck and that allowed him to mount the body back some giving him more leg room. Not an AD truck like you specifically mentioned but might be a better option.

Re: size question
I'm 6'4" 280lbs and I fit behind the wheel just fine. I'm using a stock seat in the stock location, but it is all the way back. I'm also going to put a 67-72 steering column in and I don't know how/if that will change things.

Re: size question
I would like to see that build,,, I have thought about moving the firewall forward about 3" when I redo my truck for more leg room,, going to try the 88-94 truck seat first and see if that helps?

Re: size question
I don't own a truck from this body style nor do I really want to, not to say they aren't cool I just like the AD's more, but this build makes me question that! I really love what he's done and the way its working out for him. I just had to subscribe to it!
Enjoy and good luck! -Panelrodder
