The tube is press fit in the top half of the housing and normally you don't remove it.

if you need to remove the column from the truck you take the wheel off, take the shifter lever off and then after unbolting everything and removing the plate around the column on the flooor you slide it out the bottom steering box and all.

The four bolts at the top of the gear come out and you slide the shaft and housing tube out as a unit. You will need to disconect the shift linkage and remove the wheel. As I remember I had to turn the shaft as I pulled it up.

If your removing the complete box and shaft you then disconnect the pitman arm and remove the gear box bolts and lift it out.

Torch. I tried to get one apart and it would work. I cut it off. Sawzall works as well. Otherwise, pull the wheel off and slide it out from below if you want to use it again.

Gents, he may actually want to reuse it. But yes, Matthew one of the reasons that these steering boxes can be a bit hard to find at times in good shape is a lot of guy who don't intend to reuse them do take the sawzall or torch to them.

The best way if you intend to reuse it is to drop it out the bottom in one piece.

Re: how do you remove this 1954 please help.

thanks for all the help so far... what I was going to do is use the column on a s10 frame just not the box. I thought I saw a guy on here do it with his and use the 3sp shifter as a auto shifter for his tranny.

so can I take the column off the box without messing it up?

Re: how do you remove this 1954 please help.

I used ours. I cut it off close to the flare, left the shaft longer by cutting it off near the worm gear. Then I made a bushing for the one end, a collar from the hardware store along with a spring to keep it all together. I had flats milled in the shaft and made an adapter out of the end of the old S10 column that would go over the shaft and into the double D piece on the S10 steering shaft. I didn't use the 3 speed stuff though as we have a 4 on the floor.
