Spindles?

Ok haven't had chance or take mine apart! Trying to find out if someone has Specifications for the Spindles, 67-70 and 71-72? Does anyone know the Spec's?

I've got 6 lug spindles it's the way it was made and will be keeping it like that cause I believe that the extra cost for 6 lug kits is BS! Think that disc spindles are the same 5 lug or 6 lug, could be wrong?

What I have is 1970 C-10 Chevy pickup, 292 Inline 6 cylinder, 3 speed on the tree, manual brakes and streering........hopes for it LS1, 6 speed, disc front possible on rear, power steering and brakes.

I'm not real clear on what you are asking here? Are you saying the drum spindles are the same as disc or ?

What I'm really trying to find out is SPECS on Spindles 67-70 and 71-72?
The basic print with dimention, I've check for bearing there the same for heavy duty brakes? So just would like to know, if you've changed a pair for lowering and disc intrested in differences? If you have taken them off just measure them with mic's and calipers, cause looking into how to get what I want accomplished safe and cheap.

measure WHAT exactly with the micrometer and calipers?

Length and diameter of shaft that holds hub? I do realize that the diameter changes from end to end so would need two diffrent measurements and what type of spindle it is year, and 6 lug or 5 lug?

I don't have any stock drum brake spindles to measure. If I did, they would have been thrown away a LONG time ago. My personal opinion is any money invested in front drum brakes is money wasted.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish " safe and cheap"?

Even if the measurements are of ones with disc will use that information, what wanting to do is cross over to disc. Can't afford to right now, even if could will be piecing things together(IE: buying spindles on month then calipers next, tie rods, pads& bearings).

The 11" 68-72 Chevelle rotors are the only rotor that I know of that is a bolt on to the 67-70 drum brake spindle.
You will still have to buy or fabricate a caliper mount.
From what I understand,... you will also have to use a Camaro caliper.

I scrapped 2 complete disc brake crossmembers with everything you need,... because I couldn't get $50 for them.
Swapping in a cheap 73-87 disc brake setup is by far the cheapest route to go.
You may have to hunt on Craigslist,... but they are out there.
6-lug rotors for the truck disc brake spindles, are $85-$99 each.

I'm just looking the actual measurements from each type spindle, I've read about changing to 73-87! Not what I'm thinking of at this time, could find old cheap whole truck for less than a kit for sure. By stating each type, stock 67-70 and lowered or 71 and 72.

you can switch out just the spindles and rotors from a 73-87 c10, for little of nothing. of course I would change brake pads and bearings but you could get most of it one time and then the new replacement stuff the next.

If your looking for drop spindles then good luck, they are out there but even used ones will be over $75 each I would think. if you found drops, you would still need the rotors and calipers along with the bearings and pads so it would be smart to get the disc brake stuff stated earlier until you find drop spindles.

I wouldnt hob-nob my brakes, spend a few extra dollars and get a proven solution. Just my opinion.

Clyde is right on the money! salvage yards are FULL of 1/2 ton 73-87 trucks that came stock with disc brakes ... ball joint and tie rod change and bada-boom, bada-bing you got disc brakes.

search around on the board ... many many posts on here on how to do the swap

remember, cheap is not always best.

I completely understand your tight budget. Thats exactly why everyone is trying to steer you toward converting to disc even if you don't use a drop spindle now. With a bit of luck and some quality searching you should be able to buy 73-87 parts for the same or less than you will invest in your drum brake rebuild.

We aren't trying to be unkind, but most of us have had this drum brake conversation many times. If your drum brakes need much more than the shoes replaced, your better off investing in an updated system.
