Stall converter and Gear Q's

I have a 355/350 combo, it is not a daily driver. There is a new drag strip here in Abilene and I was wondering if a 3800 stall converter would be too much, it would only be for racing. My motor has just around 345 hp.

And also what would be the best and cheapest rear gear to switch to?? I want 3.73's but don't have the 800 dollars to get it going. What are my options. Can i go to the junkyard and find a rear end that will just bolt in to my 12 bolts current location. Like what kind of automobile has 3.73 posi's stock??? And what numbers on the rear end should i look for??

Thanks
Jason

Best bet is to run a desktop dyno program to figure out approximately where your peak torque is. That should be the basis of where your converter stall should be.

How much do you want to spend on a rear end? That will determine a lot. 3.73 is too high for drag racing IMHO. You should be looking at more like 4.10 to 4.57 depending on what tires your running. A lot of 8 lug truck axles with posis or lockers can be had for nearly nothing and can be converted to 5 or 6 lug for under $450 and your labor.

thanks mike for the input

But i dont want to go that low. It will be a weekend driver and i want to be able to drive it when i want to or when my S-10 breaks or something. 3.73's are what I want. Can i go to my junkyard and look at a rearend and see a number on it and be able to tell what it is. or is there another way to tell...
Thanks
Jason

Ive found my best deals on stuff in the paper or local ad paper . Junkyards usually want a LOT for posi or locker stuff in decent ratios . Sometimes you can get really good deals out of the paper. Some rear ends like Danas have tags with the ratio. I'd look for 67-70 posi dana 60 in 6 lug semifloater with 4.10 gears. 4.10 is plenty driveable on the street . Ive seen rear ends like that at around $400 drum to drum in the paper.

cheyenne superman is there in abilene. they finally got that drag strip done and over with, huh? when i was stationed there they were dragging there feet about it. the junk yards are kinda high priced around abilene but you should be able to find a 373 rear end. you will have to find one from 67-72 if you don't want to reweld new brackets on a newer truck rear end. you could use the new truck 10 bolts, but i wouldn't think it be as strong. the cars have smaller track widths so you would have to run spacers and that's not safe for drag racing. hope this helps...

picking the correct converter is a science...you need to tell us your complete engine build..tranny..weight of vehicle..tire diameter..and what rear gears you decide on..unless your engine runs to 6500rpm I wouldnt go 3800...2500-3000 would be a good all around stall, depending on your combo...

DUDE, CALL THE PEOPLE THAT KNOW. CALL TCI OR B&M. THEY WILL ASK THE NECESSARY QUESTIONS AND RECOMMEND WHAT WOULD BE BEST FOR YOUR COMBO.

HEY, I'VE GOT FAMILY IN MERKEL. I'VE BEEN OUT THERE BEFORE!
