Light Transparent Garage Doors

I am looking into having a garage built this coming spring. I am in the process of researching garage doors. I am looking to put in one 16' X 8' overhead door.

What I have seen in my travels are shop doors that are some what transparent. Not glass panels, but appear to be some sort of composite material that provide security and insulation value, but will let the light through.

I have spent hours on google and many garage door website without much luck. I live in the middle of no where and about 10 hour drive to a decent overhead door company.

Just looking for information and if anyone here might now a manufacturer or has experience with this style of door.

If you're building in the NWT, wouldn't an insulated overhead door be more practical?

I'll bet the heat loss through those translucent doors is bad.

Re: Light Transparent Garage Doors

i'am with 67 Heaven on this one if your heating the shop Blaine. and i know that two doors are better than one big one. on my garage i am useing 2-10' x 8' mod #8300 R14 over head doors since 2003 and the seals on the bottom of the door when the temp is below -10 c as the seal gets so hard that it will not give a seal (you can see light under the door) other than that there a good door. http://www.overheaddoor.com/garage-d.../products.aspx heres a pic

Yes it needs to have an insulated value.

I have seen them used in industrial shops in cold climates, so they must have some insulated value.

The one posted above looks quite light and probably not insulated.

Thanks, yes two small doors might work better for heat, but harder to get an airplane into!

My attached garage has two small doors and this is where the daily drivers sit. I am looking to build a second garage to keep my 68 C20, Farmall H, and sleds and motorbikes. The door won't be going up and down regularly. Maybe one day I will attempt to build an airplane.

yeah, that's why I posted that ... I would have thought double pane glass is gonna be a much higher R factor than anything made of fiberglass or other type composites ... <shrug>

THANK YOU very much. I think this is the product!

This is probably what I would do, is go half light panels and have solid.

Now to find out the cost!
