Split rims on a 69 1 ton?
Are these split rims on my 69 wrecker? (1st pic) I've never had these before. I think the back ones also have that metal ring but can't tell for sure since it's a dually.
I noticed the one front wheel doesn't have it. (2nd pic) So which is correct? Thanks, Bob

Re: Split rims on a 69 1 ton?
Lower one doesn't look like a split rim, but the upper one does (to me). I think they were stock on them in '69. Nice thing is that there are plenty of non-split wheels out there so you don't have to worry about them....unless you're a purist and doing a restoration. They just aren't safe for those people who don't know how to treat them during repairs and replacement of tires.

Re: Split rims on a 69 1 ton?
My first thought was to get rid of these immediately if they are split type but I am doing a restoration so I might keep them for that reason. I'll have to find a replacement for the "replacement" on the front.
I'll have to see if any truck garages around here will work on them first.

Re: Split rims on a 69 1 ton?
^^^^ I agree %100 split rims are going to be tough to find someone to mount a tire on...something about them being illegal ( true) they can be done at home but probably arn't worth it
oh and the splits wont take radial tires without a tube so for what a tube cost these days you can pick up a new style rim |

Re: Split rims on a 69 1 ton?
Yes,that's a split rim. That's what came on the dual wheel trucks with 16" rims. The ones through '70 have smaller studs and use flat-backed lugs with those splits in the outer edge. Not quite a castle nut,not sure what to call them. I went to new chrome Budds & two new painted inners on the '70 I had. I was going to drill for 9/16 studs to press in but was talked out of it by an old feller who thought I'd have problems with that. So,we cut bevels into the wheels and used chamfered 7/16 lugs. That worked fine in my case. Actually, for a couple years I just had chrome acorn nuts on it and that worked with no problems. The later wheels will all have bores for 9/16" studs.
EDIT: Oops! slow response. If you want split rims nothing I posted is relevant. I would think PA would allow the split rims for antique registration since they are strict about vehicles having no changes from original in that classification. They'd be contradicting their own law to not allow them. Pennsylvania has plenty of old school truck shops who would help you with the tires. I agree they are nothing convenient to run these days. The cards are stacked against you. But,you are basically looking at a one time deal barring flats. Running the tire size that Model As run would also be something you can't just lope into Merchants Tire and have replaced or replaced in a jiffy, either.

Re: Split rims on a 69 1 ton?
I am going to go with antique plates as long as they accept a wrecker.
Well I have a little time to decide. I have ALOT of work to do first.
