Re: 69 short bed drive shaft replacement help needed.......
how long of a driveshaft do you need? Tailshaft to center of u-joint masurement will work. I think theirs aout 6 positions the engine and trans can be mounted in these trucks witout drilling holes.
Why not have your shaft fixed and ballaned? |

Re: 69 short bed drive shaft replacement help needed.......
Ok ill have to look in to that I just found this on the net do's it sound about right ???
I've got a 70 Chevy C-10 SWB with a 327, 700R4, 12 bolt 4:11 posi. I got a driveshaft from a mid-80's SWB because the length was perfect. The problem is, the u-joint type is the inner clip but the rear end yoke is an outer clip type. Would it be better to take the driveshaft to the shop and get them to change the end or should I change the pinion yoke to the outer type? I'm not sure if they make that yoke does anyone know? - I'm not sure what the spline count. I would try first to find a conversion u-joint. Napa (and other stores) sell a u-joint that is two different sizes - one size to fit your driveshaft and another size to fit the yoke. Tell them your two applications and see what they can find. Thanks for the tip. I found a NAPA part 240-0356 that is the correct combination u-joint. It has the - 1 1/8 with inner clip on one pair and 1 1/16 outer clip on the other. Also has the correct width for both sides (outter clip side is narrower). |

Re: 69 short bed drive shaft replacement help needed.......
inner clip u-joint for gm is called 3r your pinion yoke should be 1310. Theirs about .030 difference between a 3r and a dodge 7290.
prices off the top of my head 280 for all new. 240 if you can reuse your trans yoke. About 100 for a retube and ballance the last sounds to me like what you need. How much research and juunkyard diving would you to save a couple of bucks. Junkyard driveshaft probably needs ujoints, your trans yoke and ballanced, that would be probably 70 on top of whatever you pay for a junkyard shaft plus your time. Re: 69 short bed drive shaft replacement help needed.......
This might help. I had a 71 SWB 350 with a 700r4. Used a driveshaft out of
a mid 80's caprice. I just had to change the rear universal to get it to work.

Just an update for any one that is reading along
If you live near Lancaster, PA they told me that they can re-tube it for me and all i have to do is bring them both ends of the old drive-shaft and get the length and he will weld it and spin balance it for around $150. Bud's Spring 1420 Arcadia Road Lancaster, PA 17601-3146 (717) 392-3416 |

Re: 69 short bed drive shaft replacement help needed.......
I got really lucky today. I pulled the 4.3 tbi and 700R4 out of a 90 Caprice to get the low profile serpentine setup for my 72 SWB and have a spare power train for my 87 daily driver. I grabbed the driveline for the yoke and mocked it up in my 72 and it fits perfectly! I will need to change the rear u joint. The savings on the driveline paid for most of the powertrain.
