Need Bellhousing type starter help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Cliffs notes: Using the cast iron bellhousing between a 400 small block and a SM465. Have never had the bellhousing mount type starter before. Fresh rebuilt starter, correct external balanced flywheel. Starter sounds kind of tight like one of those pull cog friction cars from my childhood (OK last week) hehe. Do they make some kind of shim for these type starters (part#)? It gets REAL tight when it gets hot. Will probably put a heat blanket on it, but I still would like to loosen it up a bit even when it is cold. Any remedies? Let me know what you have done. Can I modify a block type starter to work with this bellhousing? Thanks, Mike

Never & always are 2 words I dont like to use...they always get this old cat into trouble

But to be honest, I have not seen troubles with a bell mount starter. I am aware that there are "machining tolorances" from the factory. Some pcs fit right on, & some dont, when swapping parts.Do you have an aftermrket flywheel? send to the top for more info...crazyL

The flywheel is a Dorman. The starter is a Worldwide reman. I am gonna swap in another one just to make sure. Beyond that, I need other options if it does the same thing. Let me know if you have any other ideas. Thanks, Mike

I dont have too much more advice on this one, other than both dowl pins in place & tight? I am running an aftermarket(Hayes billet wheel) on my 383....& I do remember the starter sounding a little tight in the beginning. Not too bad, But I listened, & after a few miles it was ok. could be in the machining on the ring gear? I will send this back to top.....if you find anything, let us know

I brought home another starter to try for tomorrow. This one looks like an actual factory piece. The other one looked like a NEW case, so I am thinking that the tolerance thing may have been a factor. We will cross our fingers and see what happens. I am going to put a blanket on it to make sure that heat doesnt add to the problem. Will let you guys know what happens. Stay tuned......
