flat paint

i was just wondering how did you guys paint your trucks if you got flat/satin/mate paint jobs and i want to see pic with trucks that are flat and have outside trim

Mine was shot with Hot Rod Black from Hot Rod Flatz.....

2 wet coats over a black sealer, down draft booth, baked for 20 minutes. I'm very pleased with the results, the truck was painted nearly 2 years ago.

We also used the hot rod flatz and had mixed results. We had a very hard time keeping it from tiger striping on us first few times we did it but finally got it decent.

Depends on how experinced the painter is, Hot Rod flats cost me and my Dad lots of time stippping repriming and tring again, 3 times. Finally went gloss base clear black. My dad has been painting along time on and off and his freind was the lead man at a Ford garage body shop for years till he started his own buisness "hell of a painter ended up doin the gloss job" the Hot Rod Flats stuff sucked. Tiger striped all over. The stuff is appealing as hell but dosnt work well. My experince is if you want black go to your local John Deere dealer and buy some semigloss black. lays like laquer, just thin it some and spray. Here is what it turns out like.

The guy that shot mine painted 3 other vehicles with HR Flatz, no issues at all. The tech sheets that come with HR Flatz are a wonderful thing.

The John Deere Blitz Black is a good heavy duty implement paint. It's been used by a lot of folks seeking the flat look, and yes, it's cheap.

There's also the "Rustoluem" method. About $30 a gallon at the hardware store. That's the route I took (for now) on my '73. Ace Hardware Rust Stop (their brand of Rustomoleum) "Satin White", reduced 50/50 mix with lacquer thinner. It says to use mineral spirits and not lacquer thinner, but we've learned that drying time is cut to less than half using lacquer... Cheap and fairly easy method for the novice painter...

Krylon Rust Proof flat black, in a rattle can. I bought it for just painting metal car parts that didn't really get seen, like the shifter for my car. It seems to come out looking pretty nice, I did the grill of my truck to see if I would like it. Thinking about doing my whole truck with it. It seems to blend well with previous coats, so for a wheelin truck it would be nice for touch ups.

If it's pretty heavy duty, it might be a better option for me. My truck needs some body work, so I was going with the rustoleum/krylon rattle cans, so I didn't have to do all the body work before I painted it, since it's my dd right now.

It's pretty good quality for what it is. From what I hear And it does look good. The problem I've heard is if you decide to go automotive paint afterwards, it has to be stripped down to bare metal. But don't quote me on that. I think I mighta read it on the internet.

Well, I plan on having it painted once and never looking back. I just want to make sure that it was done right the first time.

Man all this info is really helpful u was just asking for pic but I see it turn out to be a bif discussion but I thank ya for everythingim still not decided on how or what paint to use johndeere sounds good but I still don't know

That is a pic of my Model A I painted in 2001 JD holds up just fine. I dont know of the paint being called "blitz black" the stuff I used then on my car was just semi gloss black. Not to say thats not what they call it now. If you get their flat it is realllly flat from what I heard then. I didnt want that chalky look and I think "IMO" it looks perfect. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Exactly! Thats what keeping me from holding back on the the "flat black" paint. I'm still holding out till I come across some quality product.

well i painted with gloss and flat tremclad(rust paint)
the gloss went chalky too
yes it will all have to be removed to do it in auto paint
would i do it again?doubt it

any paint can be made to look flat by adding a flatening agent. Most auto supply stores will carry that.
