Re: WTB 73-74 inner grille supports

You may know this already, but they are welded to the core support. If these are to retrofit a 73/74 grill to a 75-80, they aren't needed to be honest, the center support and outer supports do the job just fine.

Jeff,

I've got a set of bolt in here and I'm trying to figure out exactly what they go to. They look like the ones in the photo and fit the 73-74 grille so I'm baffled.

Re: WTB 73-74 inner grille supports

Haven't seen any bolt in ones. My 73 has them factory spot welded. Perhaps 74 is different and they were bolted??

I wonder if the service part later on started using them so they could service 73-80 with one core support. We just tried bolting these into a '77 and they fit in place of the '77 inner bracket but they aren't right for the grille holes (too far outboard). We also just looked at an untouched '73 and they were welded.

Has anyone used the generic aftermarket "73-80" radiator support?

Re: WTB 73-74 inner grille supports

I went out and looked at the two 73's and the one 74 I have, those are both "part of the support" on all 3. They are not a bolt on thing as mentioned.

agreed- the illustrated parts book does show bolt on supports for the 73-74 GMC. Does anyone have one apart by chance?

Re: WTB 73-74 inner grille supports

Yes GM used a service part for them for 73-74 grilles and I picked one up a while back and it showed in the engineering diagram to screw them on to the radiator support. I can't put my hands on it right now as its in another location. There were two brackets and and maybe hardware in that GM box.

I pulled those same bolt on brackets from a 74 Jimmy, yet the 73 Blazer and the 73 truck had the welded ones.

I have removed multiple sets of these and have never seen any that were welded on.

Re: WTB 73-74 inner grille supports

there are definately bolt in ones which, I think, were used in service parts for all '73-'74 Chevrolets and all '73-'78 GMCs.

Re: WTB 73-74 inner grille supports

the grille screw holes on a chev and a gmc are different locations... further outboard on the 73 74 chevy than a 75// I tried using a 75-75 GMC set on my 77 jimmy... the recess was correct for them andf the center did work but the outer locations werent....

correct- the 73-74 Chevy are closer to the center (horizontally) and also a couple inches closer together (vertically). According to the parts book back in 70's the 73-74 Chevy would also fit the GMC through '78. The '75 Chevy mounts are closer to the fenders and on the outside edges of the grille as opposed to being in the openings in the grille

I have numerous sets of the bolt on ones that came from a 73 or 74 with the sunken grill!

Here's a pic of the ones I pulled from a 74, but they look different than your pic. Maybe someone can chime in to verify.

big10charlie - I could still use some of the bolt in ones. Let me know what you have.

There should be one more piece to go with the piece in the bottom of this picture

I bought these brackets from him along with the center and outer brackets (thanks by the way) and didn't use these supports you are speaking of. I just used the center and outer brackets, and I feel it holds the grille good enough. They look just like the ones you have pictured in this post:
