What chance does a D60 have for 3.54 gears??

I have been searching high and low for a Dana 60 w 3.54 gears for my 70 longhorn. Well today I called on a really nice long bed trailer that I can trade the guy some parts I have for. Turns out it has a D60 and I wonder what the chance is that it has 3.54 gears in it. He said the truck was a 3/4 2wd but did not say if it was a BBC or auto/manual. I know how to find out of course but thought I would see if someone had run across some and had an idea of how many were built with 3.54. And were the BBC auto 3/4 2wd the only ones that had the 3.54s? Thanks

i would say there is a very good chance it has 3.54's in it. i believe that was the most common ratio in the d 60's in our trucks.

I would say about zero chance in a 3/4 ton rear end. Maybe if it did come behind a big block. If it came behind any other engine it will be 4.10 (most common) or 4.56. The D60 semi-floaters that came in a few half tons (6 lug) are mostly 3.54 iirc.

I had a 72 factory big block 3/4 ton with D60 and 3.54 gears. I've also seen others with the same configuration that various buddies of mine owned. They're definitely out there.

On my K2500 350/TH350 the 3.54s were standard...not listed on the SPID,anyway.

Re: What chance does a D60 have for 3.54 gears??

tim, that's an odd ball. A 350/350 in a 3/4 should have 4.10
Going by the books, (not always right) a big block is the only way to get that gear set. Going by what we know, you had to have a dana for that gear, and big blocks/automatic/3/4 ton always got it unless otherwise optioned. We also know a small (almost not worth mentioning) number of inline trucks got it. Tims is the first small block I can recall hearing about with it.

With all that being said, you are searching for a rather lame rear end. D60 has a goot rep, but not these ones in the 3/4 tons trucks. The axle shafts (28 spline if memory serves) is weak and likes to shatter.

Re: What chance does a D60 have for 3.54 gears??

Looks like a mixed bag here. I am not woried about the axles as this is just a driver that sees very little work and no bad weather. I am most concerned about the ratio and I will be finding out today I hope. My Longhorn currently has at least 4.56 and it is a bugger to drive anywhere on the freeway and getting this 3.54 ratio would make it a truck that gets used to cruise places a lot more.
I asked the guy if it was a BBC truck and he did not know but is going to look today.

Thanks for the input as I was just curious. Thanks

Same thing I had, and I have seen it in most 3/4 ton trucks.

I Have a d60 w/3.40 gears from a 71 gmc 3/4 for free if anybody close around to pick it up.

Re: What chance does a D60 have for 3.54 gears??

The guy I bought mine from said it must have 3.73s because it drove so nice at hiway speeds. I thought nothing of it,didn't know any better at the time. I did drive it cross country and agreed it rolled on the interstates nicely. When I serviced it I confirmed it had 3.54s. I've seen a lot of trucks with what should be optional not listed on the SPID. Has anyone else noticed that? I have rarely ever seen gearing listed on any SPID. I don't think the books are wrong. Drivetrain combinations are cast in stone.
I think it's an ideal ratio and just right for these days with fuel consumption being considered more strongly than back in '72. They pull well with a load, yet roll on the highway with ease. I've always wanted the "UMPH!" in my gears and prefer 4.10-4.56s in my 8-lug trucks. I tend to go taller with my tires, also. I'm looking to change my rears to a 4.10 HO52/Dana60 combo due to going to much larger tires. I'm sure the 3.54 set will be a great find for someone when I let them go. The guy I bought the HO52 from about gave it to me (w/No-Spin) after he swapped to a 14-bolt to get 3.73s. These Dana60s are the original axle with the modern ratio for these trucks.

No you don't, no such thing as a 3.40 ratio for a D60

Re: What chance does a D60 have for 3.54 gears??

My big block 70 Sierra Grande had 3.54. But my parts 70 GMC Longhorn has 3.73. Visually verified, but it is an open diff and the SPID say s Maximum Traction Diff, so I know something has been changed. I assume an aftermarket install?

I have another 70 C2500 GMC parts truck that was a 6 banger 3 speed originally. Ratio tag is missing from cover, so will be interesting to find out what's inside at some point.
