New aftermarket stereo installation -- dash uncut ....

I finally mounted my new Pioneer stereo in my square using a marine stereo housing and bracket. Mounted the stereo to the metal dash support just under the ash tray. Just needed to drill two holes for the bracket. I decided to do this rather than cut out the dash where the OEM radio is mounted. I kept the OEM radio for aesthetics.

What do you honestly think about the under dash mount? Stupid looking or ....

I like it! I'd be tempted to redrill the bracket to raise the radio slightly closer to the dash.

Might be a good option for me. do that with my radio, and have a place for my diesel gauges after the install.

Edit,

On second thought that puts the radio right where my shifter is. Haha.

I don't think it looks stupid at all. I might just go pick one of those up to drop in my 62 T-bird so I can avoid putting an aftermarket stereo in her.

For your classic bird, I suggest using a tissue dispenser to mount/hide your aftermarket stereo. This option provides for a more classic and period look. I was planning to go this route but I wanted to see how the marine set up looked/worked first. If it didn't fulfill my needs, then option 2 -- tissue dispenser. See pics.

If you decide to go with the marine mount, see pic for details. I researched marine mounts and all are not created equal. You pay for what you get and the cheaper ones have defective mount covers. The mount I chose is incredible and the cover/hinge is solid. Perfect closure, no gaps. Cost is between $60-$70 and can be purchased on ebay or special ordered from marine shops.

Good luck with your mount. Post some pics when you're done.

Additional pics showing why stereo mount positioned low (but adjustable) in order to use the ash tray slot.

It works well for my GPS and my coffee cup but just overload it by supersizing your drinks, else snap goes the ash tray.

Nice. I looked at the same stereo mounting bracket that you used but I also wanted a face cover. This could still be an option for me if the following face cover fits your stereo bracket. This is a marine cover from the same company. Not sure how it attaches but I assume it is screwed into the brackets. Also need to the dimensions of the bracket for fitment.

Re: New aftermarket stereo installation -- dash uncut ....

I definitely like the tissue dispenser better.

I just cut up my dash and put it in the stock location. I know, ruins the classic look and all, but my truck (aesthetically) is a rusty POS so i'm not worried about it so much. Tissue box looks clean and much more like it belongs than the marine radio housing. That's just my $.02 worth. I'm definitely not trying to bash your ideas cause it's totally something I would have done if I didn't have a CB there. Just saying if you're going for looks, that tissue dispenser looks so much cleaner and less out of place, to me.

Maybe it's a stupid question, but has anyone ever installed a deck on the face of the dash where the a/c vent is?

hey,im not sure what thread on the board its in but a fellow on here has an orange truck with interior pics he put the deck in the left AC slot like infront of the middle seat.it looked amazing actually.

only thing is,you cant reach down all the time to turn the knobs n buttons youd crash your truck, unless you had a remote?

i dont gotta worry about it the P/O of my truck cut my dash, but very neatly and folded the metal back so i could fold back, weld, grind down touch up etc.

the tissue box is cool, but still far away from the driver....??

That's a pretty good idea too. The issue I have is with the dash setup r/t the radio placement. Under the radio, where a lot of folks would put an add on radio, is the map light and I don't want to mess with that. The 61-63 dash is somewhat unique for cars from the early 60's and makes for a difficult placement. I thought about a hidden audio setup for her because of it.
