My 82 K20

So i bought a k20 a few weeks ago and have been lurking around here for a bit.

I have seen where people say 4.56 gears were standard on camper specials some say 4.10s etc.

i guess i wanna know some about my truck. The dealership cant give me a build sheet and the glove box doesnt have any stickers in it.

can someone get me a build sheet? Tell me what to look for to find out if its a 8400lb model?

Heres a horrible pic

Welcome to the forum. You'll probably have to pull the cover off of one or both pumpkins and count the ring and pinion teeth.

Re: My 82 K20

To find out the gear ratio put the rear on jack stands and mark the tire and the drive shaft. If the drive shaft rotates 4 1/2 times for 1 tire rotation you have 4.56 gears, just over 4 and you have 4.10 and so on

Re: My 82 K20

A camper special had nothing to do with rearend ratio, you could have 3.73's, 4.10's, or 4.68 gears. You will want 4.10's with running 33's.

Re: My 82 K20

well its got a 350/sm465/np205 14 bolt ff with locker and 8 lug 10 bolt up front.

the leafs have 8 per side in the rear. has 4 inch lift blocks (yuck) and 4 inch rough country springs in the front. Its currently got mis match 33's on it and has tons of grunt. It looks like theres room for some 35 or 36'' tires in there.

my plans are to do a partial restoration. I plan on spending 5-7 grand on it between now and the fall.
Hoping to put a nicely build 350 or 454 in it cant decide there yet.
Rebuild the tranny
Repace the seals in the np205 and both axles. I would like to source some CUCV axles to swap in to get 456 gears and a dana 60 up front.
New gas tanks unless i can fix leaks and possibly sending units.
Fix the rusted spring shackle buckets and do a rear shackle flip to do away with the lift blocks.
do an 84/85 style front grill conversion. Its got the ugly 88-91 work truck front end.
fix all bed and cab mounts and replace bushing etc
fix the inner and outer rockers and cab corners. Theres only a few spots on the floors that need patched.
drop it off to my buddy who does body work and let him do his magic painting it a darker blue like the new camaro color and paint the interior metal black.
Replace all interior pieces with black such as door panels, dash pad, seat, vinyl floor and replace all gauges.
If money allows after all that i would like to put a front winch bumper and 12000 lb winch on it.

Here in the next few weeks i will be pulling the bed and fixing spring shackle buckets and doing the shackle flip. Along with fixing/replacing gas tanks and sending units. I will post up some pics and updates as i go along.

Re: My 82 K20

cool truck. I have a 1980 k20 that has a sm465, no205 and a 350. Mine has a 6" lift and 315's as well as 456 gears. Just to give you an idea, at highway speeds I'm runnin about 3000 rpm for 70 mph, and get 10 mpg there abouts. Im debating on getting some 410's to drop the rpms down to 2-300 rpm. good luck with the build

Re: My 82 K20

ok so i have a problem.

The forward most rear leaf spring hangers have broken. They were rusted but the broke off. LMC wants 112 each for them. Do these normally pop up used? I dont mind buying new just trying to find deals.

Also i noticed i have pretty good death wobble (its got a 4'' lift) if i hit bumps any solutions? x over steering?

I also have a kathunk sound and feeling when coming to a complete stop. Normal vehicles just rock a bit this guy kathunks. what could that be?

You can try going to www.vintagevehicleservices.com - you can order a vehicle history report based on your VIN. Gives you all the options, where it was built, where it was sold & even how much it cost.

Re: My 82 K20

ok trying to keep everything in one thread. I have 2 problems. My tail lights arent working. I have break lights back up lights and turn signals but thats in. 2nd problem is my fuel gauge is in the 3 oclock position. It does cycle from "E" to that spot.

I replaced all bulbs pulled out the light buckets and checked all plugs. They all were working up till a few days ago. I didnt do anything other than drive it.

Anyone have any suggestions or ideas.
