Fuel Pump Problems

Ok so I recently put in a new holley mechanical fuel pump push rod style into my fresh crate engine. I was trying to start it up the other day and successfully got fuel to the carb float bowls and even got it to run for about 15 seconds.

Now I am not getting the fuel pump to work at all. I took off all my fuel lines and made sure there were no obstructions in the line. Every thing was clear except from the outlet from the fuel pump in the line there was a little bit of tree debris.

I am assuming my fuel pump must be fuel of junk and it is causing it not to work. I also rotated the inlet and outlet of the fuel pump to make hooking up my fuel lines easier.

So now I am wondering what I should do, should I just order another fuel pump or is there any way to tear mine down and clean it out and possible salvage it?

Re: Fuel Pump Problems

try lo pressure blowing into the outlet of the pump and see what comes out the inlet side

major question is where did the crap come from? b4 going any further with pumps it maybe best to take out fuel tank and clean it

Re: Fuel Pump Problems

Fuel tank is brand new relocated to the rear. The leaves are little pine needles from where my paint and body man lives further north from me. I am guessing he must have let it sit outside without a fuel cap on it when he had the bed removed while he had it for a year. I also emptied the old fuel from the tank before firing it which was about 12 gallons so I was hoping that would have got the majority of the junk out.

Re: Fuel Pump Problems

This is why a pre-filter is of the utmost importance

Re: Fuel Pump Problems

Ok so I took the fuel pump apart tonight and it was full of little pine needles... I guess the moral of this story is to use protection if you don't know where that gass tank has been... err a pre-filter.

Experience tells me that you're about to get a comment about vapor lock

Re: Fuel Pump Problems

Yep, it is possible to get a vapor lock by putting a filter before a mechanical fuel pump. My son has done it on a few of his truck without a problem until the debris problem cleared up.

I on the other hand tried it and the pressure drop across the fuel filter caused vapor lock issues.

Never have vapor locked even on the hottest days...Since I didn't have a sock on the suck pipe I needed a filter somewhere

Re: Fuel Pump Problems

if you're cloggin things up weather filter pump or carb the best would be to remove tank and clean crap out to prevent further glogging and possible damage
