What do I have?
Hello, I'm kinda new to the forum joined in Dec of last year but haven't had a lot of time to browse the site till now. I'm currently deployed to iraq and I keep having this nagging question about the 68 stepside I bought right before leaving. I think the truck has a later model frame it has disc brakes, rear leaf springs, and the motor sits farther forward than I think it should. I'm sure this question has been answered before, but how do i know what frame i have and where do I look for a number. This knowledge would be helpful when it comes time to buy parts to rebuild this thing. Thanks in advance for any help

First off WELCOME to the site!
Now your question, Pics would help. The VIN number which you could decode is stamped into the top of the drivers side frame rail close to the front. Also factory V8 trucks have the motor pretty far forward. |

Re: What do I have?
hey, usmcchevy thanks for the welcome yeah pictures didnt have time for like i said bought the truck right before we left to go to our mob site hope to snap some pics when i go home on leave. I'll see if my dad can get the vin off the frame and see what it is on the sites vin decoder . It does have v-8 looks like a q-jet carb hei distibutor and looks like a 12 bolt rearend my other problem is the guy I bought it from was moving at the time and lost the title good thing is no money has changed hands yet and hes going to file for a lost title when we get home. Truck has the usual rusted rockers and both doors have about half dollar size rust spots near the bottom and the floor seems as solid as it was when it rolled off the assy line

Re: What do I have?
On a 4x4 the motor sits back against the firewall, but the 2wd it does sit fairly far forward. These trucks could have come with leafs or coils, so that isn't a problem. The disc brake swap is a very common swap on the drum brake trucks, so I wouldn't be terribly skeptical of that either. Check the frame VIN, you are probably OK.
