NOS Blue Bowtie Hubcaps & how to make them blue!

I restore a lot of hubcaps and even make/cut & roll 3/4T front 4x4 caps. I keep getting requests for "blue" bowtie caps, not the yellow.
It is only blue paint...anyone can paint the bowties blue.
Here is an NOS blue, an NOS yellow, and the yellow "painted blue"...and pics of how to do it. Hope this helps.

Masking & detail painting is some of the most satisfying work there is. It just takes a bit of patience and care, then look at the results. Looks great! I've done the yellow to blue on wheel covers and that's a real chore. I assume you've done those,Frank. Fun,huh? It ain't nothin' but tape and paint

Re: NOS Blue Bowtie Hubcaps & how to make them blue!

The problem that I run into is finding the right color. I would like to redo some hubcaps and emblems but I can't find the right color. I hate it when I am done and the color is obviously off a little. How do you identify the right color before you start?

The local auto paint supply store will mix any color and put it in spray can for us...OR just try to find a blue that is close from existing supplies.

Re: NOS Blue Bowtie Hubcaps & how to make them blue!

I searched for the 'right' shade of blue without alot of reference other than pictures on here. A snowy Sunday afternoon, a warm garage and a couple of cold sodies, and this is what I got. As you can see, the shade isn't exact. As the cap says, Furd Blue. But at 10 feet or 10 mph, it's close.

i've found that good ol Rustoleum 7724 Sail Blue is a very good match. Available at Wally World

I'd be interested in hearing how you re-shape the 3/4 tonner 73+ innies into 71 and earlier outies.

That's a great job,Frank. If I send you a set of caps with yellow bowties, will you paint them blue?

Re: NOS Blue Bowtie Hubcaps & how to make them blue!

I just did this a few months back. I used Krylon True Blue. I would say the match is excellent.

Additionally, I did the cog wheel as well as the full circle that surrounds the bowtie. Used SEM ProMax Satin Black.

Had my caps blasted, then powdercoated. Sanded very specifically ONLY the areas that would receive paint. Then masked off and shot the inner circle and cog. Then did exactly as depicted for the bowtie. Yes, patients is key. I figured it took me right at 24 man hours to do what I described for all 4.

Came out great...very happy with them.

2 things:

1)Go to an auto paint supply house, and get some 1/8th" or even 1/16th in. detail tape as shown above. I used a vynil tape, but I actually think a "regular" tape might work better. More flexible, I imagine. Use this only for your paint line. Follow the pics for everything else.

2)Get yourself all the patients you can muster. It is painstaking work. This is not the kind of thing to rush through. Your results will directly reflect the level of detail you put into it.

Good luck.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Getting everything taped off correctly is the most difficult part. Definitely more challenging than it looks.
