Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
My thoughts are if you want to ride ,EDELBROCK if you want to tinker,HOLLEY. Both are very good and I used many of each with satifactory results but I would recommend the 600 ele. choke EDELBROCK cause you can set it once and drive. You must know the major faults with that carb is that sometimes one a dual pattern intake like the performer you might need a different carb gasket to make sure the base is sealed. Second the needle and seats are touchy and you need a really good filter in front of the carb. Iam sure others will chime in on the age old quandry holley vs. edelbrock/carter vs.qjet. to each his own and all are graet when good junk when not. I no that helps you NONE. So Junk it all and go with a TBI [jokeing] .Jim

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
I run a Holley Truck Avenger because they can still function at some pretty steep angles since I'm on bags and will have the motor running with the rear all the way down and front up or vice versa or side to side. Ive also used a street avenger on my old 71 and never had any problems. But I will say I wouldnt mind running an edelbrock either, and I have with no real problems. Im not hung up between the two but I am still young

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
It's always a matter of personal preference. I've been driving and workin on GM vehicles for many years and I prefer a good qjet. It's been good enough for the General all these years so it's good enough for me. I'm comfortable rebuilding them.

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
Been running a Holley 650 for two years now and have only adjusted a few times to get peak perf. Took only 10 mins or so to do it. Like the previous post, I've found the carb does well on inclines or when I enjoy throwing around a parking lot!!!! Heard good things about edelbrock too, just found a better value from this one.
I'm also running a sb350 with perf intake and hei setup. Good luck!

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
i have mild cam and performer rpm intake on my 350 with a 600 edelbrock electric choke.the carb has been on the motor 3 years and no issues at all. i just put a 750 edelbrock on a 396 in my other truck because i was so happy with the 600.

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
I've been running a 600 edelbrock on my modified 350 for 5 years with zero issues. It starts right up every time and I've never messed with it.

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
I've had good luck with my q-jet (rebuilt several years ago) on a Performer 2101. I don't tinker with carbs other than idle adjustment if needed, so it has not been touched and still works well.

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
Unless you have a HEAVILY modified engine in a truck that you'll be racing only, a Q-jet is the way to go. Chevy put em on all of their high performance muscle cars for a reason. The smallest 4 barrels will flow plenty when your foot gets heavy and the smaller primaries will give you better gas mileage than a holley or edelbrock. It is still to this day one of the most sophisticated (which is actually a good thing) carbs ever designed/built.

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
Holley carbs are not as hard to "tune" as everybody thinks. A Holley 1850 (600cfm) would be a good choice. Or one of the Holley "Avenger" series of carbs...
The Q-jets are good carbs... but finding a good rebuildable one (which includes having the throttle shafts rebushed) is getting to be a pain. Edelbrock carbs suck... but that's just me... Gary

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
I have a 570 Holeey Street Avenger on mine. I've had it for 6 years total with no issues. Been on there 3 years now with the same initial tune.

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
I've been very happy running Edelbrock carbs. A Quadrajet in good condition is a nice carb, but the Edelbrocks are very easy to tune. Haven't had the pleasure of messing with any Holleys, so can't comment there.

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
I would convert to fuel injection. If you must have a carb, then a Holley if you want reliable performance and don't care about mileage. A Qjet if you want to drive it and want mileage. Not just anyone can build a Qjet, I used to have good luck with the rebuilt by Holley Qjets from Auto Zone, but I have heard bad things lately. I had one built by the Carburetor Shop in Ontario CA one time and it was really nice.

Re: need opinions on a carb for my truck
If you want the closest to Fuel Injection without the hassle.....Q-JET
Carter/Edelbrock is a close second to the Q-jet. Holley is about going fast with tinkering, Holley is just a semi-controlled fuel leak. I have built plenty of Holley's and Quardajets, along with working on a few Carters/Edelbrocks. Most of my vehicles have Quardajets and one has a Edelbrock (due to 4500 series style intake or it would have a Jet too) and they all start and run like a late model fuel injected car. All the Holley have been problematic to say the least, pulled everyone off any street driver. How about looking at Fuel injuection.
