knocking

Im p/u up a 98 crew cab dually with a vortec 454 this week in a trade but there is a knock
coming from the engine comparment. This is not a big deal to me as im trading a project truck for it. Im thinking flexplate or torque convertor as the engine has 50-60psi of oil @ idle and has no miss What are your thoughts?

Re: knocking

i have seen a cracked flexplate and/or loose torque converter bolts cause a knock that sounded very similar to an engine knock.....

get a stethoscope and do some listening....

Re: knocking

Been awhile since I have posted but I had to change jobs and have been busy so here is a
update.
When I got the truck homee I checked the flexplate for cracks and could not find any leading me to believe it was the engine but with work slowing I could not get into it @the that time.
Fast forward to now I got the pan pulled off while the engine is still in the truck just had to pull the engine mount bolts and lift the engine and pulled the mains and rods and the engine lost the #5truck rod bearing.I think I has located a take out engine with good compression and the bearings look good for a decent price then I think I will keep the old engine and build a 496 out of it for later.

Re: knocking

Scored a takeout engine along with the 4l80e yesterday complete with wiring harness for engine and trans and a ecm with 25,000 miles on them for $1000 and the guy threw in a complete minus gauges cherry dash also.
So when I put this engine in I now have a complete other setup to put the other 454 vortec in my squarebody after I rebuild the engine.

Re: knocking

Well again it has been awhile work has kept me really busy only getting home on Friday nights and leaving on Sundays or working for a month at a time up in the refineries so not a lot of free time.
What time I had I was trying to spend with the wife and kids but the truck is finally alive!
Runs good and strong around the block anyways( non op so I can't take on the highway yet).
Now have to clear service soon light, smog and tag.
