sbc break in

Well finally got my motor all ready to break in so started it running fine but after about 4 min at 2000rpms my temp gauge isnt going up so i shut it down thinkin sonethings wrong. my headers are red hot so shouldnt my temp gauge be reading something i have a new 4 core and dual fans i just had them going full blast what do you think?

If your headers are glowing I would say advance the timing. I did that once because I was trying to do it alone and I didnt want to stop on the break in and lose the cam. I got out and looked at the motor for a second and the headers were so red it looked almost transparent. start it up rev it to about 2500-3000 RPM and have someone set the timing to 34-36* while its running. Should cure the problem.

Make sure your carburetor isn't flooding over. Floats set to high or too much fuel pressure will turn the headers red quick! Smell your oil, you can smell raw gas when their real rich...

Our dirt cars did that when they were lean or not enough fuel.

alright well i got it warming up fine needed a themostat but i noticed some of the cylenders are hotter than others like the tube coming out of #2 is alot more blue than any of the other cylenders on that side of the motor. Could this be due to adjusting valves wrong or the timing because this is still a brand new motor

I wouldn't go off color of tubes, but using a heat sensing gun on each tube of the header is much more effective and accurate (they are cheap at harbor freight). But if this an issue it could be intake design and unequal fueling, unequal cranking compression due to a valve open or rings not seated completely allowing blow by. Just a few thoughts.
