Hi all,
My ehxaust manifold recently took a sh*t, and I am thinking of running headers (or would that be a header?) on my 72 in-line 6(250 CU). I was wondering what this job entails, and if it is worth it. I would appreciate any input, as I am pretty ignorant on this subject. Thanks

I think there was/is a company called clifford research they are 6-cylinder specialists. Should have a web site.

Clifford has headers and I think Hooker used to make some. They pop up on e-bay from time to time

One problem with headers ont the inline is you lose your manifold heat. Don't know how cold it gets where you are, but here in Kansas those that run headers usually go with water heat on the manifold. Not as fast as exhaust heat, but better than nothing.

I have Heddmans on mine, easy install, no leak problems. Will probably go with Clifford next time. To use their intake and water heat plate. Definately need a heat plate, makes a big difference.

How about just replacing the exhaust manifold? I sold a 6cyl to a guy a while back and he was going to use it in a boat so he wouldn't need the exhaust manifold, do you want me to ask if he wants to part with it?

Thanks to everyone for the help, I found a manifold that I think might work. I have to drill out a broken stud and helicoil it, but it's alot cheaper than headers. Now that you guys have given me some info on the subject, I think that I will save up for the headers. I live in southern Arizona,so I don't think heat will be a problem. Again, thanks for the input. This site is great!

HI, I'm in Tucson. I have Clifford headers on my '68 stepside. Put them on in '78.
They have outlasted the L-6 292 they were bolted to and after I get them metal/ceramic coated, I'll put them back on to the next 292.

I'm putting in the Stovebolt shorty headers along with 2" pipe and Flowtech mufflers within the next 2 weeks. Let me know if anyone is interested in the results...
