I think it looks great. No better way to learn than to do. Certainly far and away better than anything I could do. You should be proud.

Re: just waiting on paint to dry

Finished, got 3 coats of Southern Polyurethane on there. Dont see a any stripes, but cant say for sure till I get it out in the sun tomorrow. Thanks Dave, I am very proud of what I'v accomplished on this build. Experience is the best teacher for sure.

Re: just waiting on paint to dry

That looks good . You should be happy with that. No better way to get good but do it over and over. Metalics are tricky because you have to pat specail attention to overlap and air pressure. Jim

I can tell you spent a lot of time prepping before you shot that - no bumps or waves in the reflections.

What color is that?

Re: just waiting on paint to dry

Care to share your experiences at length? I assume from your comments this is your first go at paint?

I am not near paint, but I do hope to do my own and will be shooting a dark blue metallic when I do. I'd love to hear your experiences as a first time painter working with similar materials that I'll be using.

BTW, that looks great. I am hoping to come out with a really nice 2-3 footer on mine. Not show quality by any means, but something that looks good.

Re: just waiting on paint to dry

Looks great! I too would like more details, as I am also going to paint mine. I have sprayed three other trucks, but they were "20 footers". I am learning as I go, so details on yours would be great. Thanks and good luck..

Re: just waiting on paint to dry

Thanks Guys. It is or was my first time. I spent hours and hours on the body work. probably more than i needed to to achive the same results. I first spent time just educating myself on whats what, after spending a lot of time reading and following post. I decided to use Southern Polyurethane for all my primers and clear. great products easy to use, afforadable and I couldn't find one person anywhere (even online) say anything negative about there products, so I gave them a try. they worked great, I will definitely use them again. My paint choice was House of Kolor. I mixed Gray and silver together and thats what i came up with, it is a very cool color, with lots and lots of metallic. the pictures dont even come close to how sweet this color looks in the sun. all in all it was a lot of hard work, my hats go off to all the body men out there, I have a new respect for you. I'm so glad I took it on, it was worth every penny I saved doing it myself. I painted all the pieces separate, I thought it would be easier, less chances of having those famous metallic tiger stripes, and for the most part it worked, the hood is the only thing that i stripped. I figured its because my arms were to small to reach across and i tilted the gun, plus i was going to slow. this time I picked up the pace, and made sure i didn't tilt the gun. Two extra dusting coats help to. Next Ill wet sand and buff it to match the rest of the truck, then install it. If you click the link in my signature it will take you to my build thread and a lot of the body work details are there. Ive included a few pics of the paint. If theres any thing in particular anybody wants to know I would be happy to answer. I'm certainly not a professional, but I can offer a novices opinion. Thanks again for all the commits

see the Stripes. the second time was even worse.

Re: just waiting on paint to dry

Allright, I do have more questions, drop and tire size?

Did you paint it just open in your shop, or did you have a paint booth setup?

Any resources you recommend as "must reads" for first time painters? I am watching threads and whatnot, but am more curious if there were books or specific write-ups?

the drop is 4.5/6 tires and wheels are 245/45-18 and the rears are 255/45-18

I painted it in my three car garage with the doors open, I know thats not ideal, but when I shut all the doors it was to dark, surprisingly enough I had almost no trash or dirt in the paint. and what I did have wet sanded and buff out.

as far as must reads, the two place I kept referring back to all the time was the southern Polyurethane website and there forum. lots of good info there and the people are well knowledgeable and dont have a problem with sharing there experiences, even the owner (Barry) is on and will help. he even gave me his cell number and told me to call him anytime. Now that whats i call service. autobody101.com was also a good source. My best advice for the newbie would be to learn the vocabulary, learn what each thing is and what it does. learn the difference between epoxy, polyester, urethane primers, each one has a specific job. one of the other things that i still struggle with is sand paper grit. how coarse of paper should you use for a specific job. The one thing that I hate is to see a nice paint job on a car, only to see sand scratches under the paint when you get up close. Because of that Im sure I used to fine of a grit. which probably caused me twice as much sanding. once you know what everything is, the the rest is just doing it. and practice on some small stuff first to get a feel of the gun. I even taped a paint brush to the end of my gun, and practiced spraying using the brush as a guild for gun distance. I would do this at least once every night weeks before i was ready to paint.
