swapping a 350 for the tired inline 6
New guy question. Looked through the forum and didn't find the answer, so here goes. What do I need as far as motor mounts to swap my inline 6 with a sb 350? I can fab a crossmemeber for the turbo 350 trans and run an aftermarket shifter so that's not a problem. Thanks, Doug

What year of truck and which 6 cylinder? If you have a '63-'66 with a 230/250, you don't need to change anything. Just get new motor mounts, bolt them up to the 350 and drop it in. You might be able to remover the mounts themselves from the 6 cyl brackets, but I can't say for certain. If you have a '63-'66 with a 292 6 cyl then you will need at the least a passenger side frame bracket, as the 292's had offset motor mounts. In the '63-'66's the 230/250 6 cyl and the V8's used the same motor mount brackets and in the same location.
If you have a '60-'62 and want to install a V8, you can use the V8 motor mount brackets from either the '63-'66's or the '67-'72's. But you will have to add a filler piece on top of the frame as the '60-'62 frames are shorter in height. The '67-'72 small block brackets would be a closer fit than the '63-'66's If you have the '63-'66, there is no need to fab a trans crossmember. Just get one from a '63-'87 truck with an auto trans, slide it in the frame, drill some holes, and bolt it in. Quote:

It's been since 1988, but when I pulled my inline 6 out of my 66 and put in a 327, I didn't have to get anything for it. The six cylinder had three pieces to the motor mount, you just pull out the middle piece and it's a match. The clutch linkage had an extra piece reaching to the block that I just had to remove, and the bell housing all mounted up the same. I am fairly sure I didn't have to do anything with the throttle linkage either. My 6 was a knockin' and I was 18 and wanted a 327.

I'm looking for all the mounting hard wear for my 1972 nova 250 inline 6.
I miss not seeing the inline 6 in trucks.Every time i go looking at trucks they have V8 or big blocks. Now days with gas getting up there the 6's are starting to come back into fashion.Slide a 700R4 with a offhandhouser intake with a 4 bb carb and your done. Here is the picture of the inline 6 i need the frame mount and the mounts on the block .I have a 1968 longhorn that had the 396 with 400 with Air and power steering Looking to convert it over to 1/2 ton with front disc brakes. I'm looking for the AC ( air conditioning ) brackets as well for the inline 6 250 |

Don't mean to highjack the thread, but kind of related...
I am picking up an I6 this weekend. The guy is not sure if it is 250 or 292, but is from a mid-80s p/u. I have two 66 LWB C10s. One has an I6 already with a 3 spd. It has a blown head gasket. The other has no motor or tranny. It has dual exhaust and was set up for auto transmission. I have a THM350. Don't know if it is good or not. It was one my step-dad had when he passed away. It was in the shed behind the garage and no one knows anything about it. Can I mate the I6 with the THM350? Does it need to be long or short tail shaft? Will the crossmember from earlier mod support this setup assuming previous setup was a 350/350? I want to get the second truck running so I can get the inspection done and get it titled before I sink a large sum of cash into it. If I dont put this in the white truck, it will replace the engine in the red with the blown head gasket. Thoughts? Comments? Thanks in advance.

We used motor mounts from a 91 burb and had to notch the frame on my 66 gmc, they did not just bolt in. after notching the frame flange everything worked very well, we had no issues with the distributor (had to notch the frame slightly for headers.

My 250 has , long tube headers, an Offy intake with a 2bbl 350cfm Holley and runs great. But Lakeroadster is spot on about the gas , the lil six is thirsty !
The hop up parts are expensive not cheap but diffrent

I like my I6 but my fuel milage sucks. I already added a T5 and I'm sure that I could do a few more things but I have a tuned port L98 to drop in place. I figure the V8 will work less and with fuel injection and driven correctly it should be quite a bit better. I'm glad you asked the question because I was just about to start searching.

A stock 350 with a quadrajet, dual exhaust and a 700r4 or even a turbo 350 will get better MPG that a six. just because of the torgue factor. we are pushing 3800 lbs plus guys.

Put a Pontiac motor in it and you'll have all the torque you will ever want and more.
It's a bolt in. Then again, you could do what everyone else is doing....
