Strange trans hump?

I found this trans hump for sale and it has me confused. I know that the 4x4s and the 4 speeds had the removable humps, but why would a 2 wheel drive automatic?

These were put in to clear the TH400 tranny's behind the BB

I had a 70 with a 350/TH400 had the same hump in it.

Re: Strange trans hump?

Dont all trucks have a removable hump? I have a 69 C10 w/auto and a 72 GMC 4X4 w/auto, both of them have removable trans hump. I also had a 70 GMC and a 71 Chevy, 1 manual the other auto and they had the removable trans hump. The autos except my 4X4 all had the small hump but they all come out by removing a few bolts. I thought they all did?

Re: Strange trans hump?

The low humps are part of the cab and not removeable. A Big block/th400, 4 speed truck, or 4x4 generally had the bolt in hump.

My 69 came with a small block and auto trans and the low hump bolted in, all my trucks came with removable humps, short or tall humps. Did they make different cab floors at different plants or something? I'm curious.

Never made a bolt in low hump that i have seen. Your 69 probably had a TH400 behind it originally.

Re: Strange trans hump?

No, there are NO removable low hump trans tunnels from the factory in any 67-72.

Re: Strange trans hump?

I replaced the original TH350 in my 69 a few years ago and installed a four speed out of another truck I bought, my grandfather bought my truck new. Anyway, when I replaced the trans I had to simply unbolt my small hump and bolted in the tall hump out of the donor truck. I had the same removable low hump in my 71 C10, I unbolted it when I replaced the trans in it. I'm confused now.

Re: Strange trans hump?

If they were bolted in, they were hi-humps.

I must have some unusual trucks then, when I pulled the TH350 in my 69, I had to unbolt the low hump because the four speed wouldn't with it, I had bought another truck so I could use all the parts like the clutch linkage, pedal, drive line and the taller hump. When I was done I remember bolting the low hump in the donor truck when I sold it. Either way, I guess I had a couple of oddball trucks because they definitely had removeable low humps.
Maybe someone put in aftermarket low trans humps in two of my trucks, I don't know, but I do know they were there.
I must have been lucky! Thanks.

Re: Strange trans hump?

What some people do if they need the extra clearance is cut out the small hump and bolt a high hump in.

A turbo 400 fits under a low hump cab. It's just closer to the floor than a high hump cab will be. If you have nice cab mount bushings it will clear fine. Only if you try getting by with 40 year old saggy original mount bushings do you have interference issues.

Re: Strange trans hump?

Just as a side note, there are odd ball trucks out there - mine was a 307, 3 on the tree, 2 WD LWB and I have a bolt in high hump cab.

Re: Strange trans hump?

A th400 will bolt into a small hump truck with no mods, i did it with a big block and a 400th in my 69 short step.

Ok, I'm going to ask the question everybody is thinking to themselves, do you have any pics of this bolt in low hump? I've never even heard of such a thing.

Re: Strange trans hump?

the TH400 didn't dictate a high hump, that one always comes up and i always wonder where that info comes from. A th400 with a big block got the high hump, but a th400 on a small block or inline got the low hump

Re: Strange trans hump?

I had a C/30 350/TH400 with a low hump floor. I never saw any low hump that bolted from the factory. It would have been a great idea,if they did.

BTW,that automatic 2wd hump is a great deal.Did you snag it?

No, didn't get it. I have quite a few already, but had never seen one without holes in it.
