Tailgates: C10 vs Super

I have a 72 Super. The tailgate has "Chevrolet" imprinted in it. It does not have the Chevrolet band on it. Could this be the correct tailgate? Do I just need to add the band?

Right, just add the woodgrain band to be correct.

All tailgates had Chevrolet or GMC stamped in them

I don't think so. My Highlander tailgate has a flat surface where the "Chevrolet" band goes.

Not sure if the trim piece will cover the stamped letters.

Original gates should all be stamped with chevrolet or gmc. The trim does cover. Sounds like you may have a repro gate.

Just replaced the trim piece on my tailgate and big chevrolet letter were hiding underneith the old one. So they are definetly right about it.

Re: Tailgates: C10 vs Super

Does it have holes where the trim used to be?

Re: Tailgates: C10 vs Super

No, I wish it did. A PO repainted the truck. Looks pretty good. I think they filled the clip holes before painting. I know most of the side trim is held on with adhesive clips (Aaaargh!!!). I suspect they did the same to the tailgate OR the tailagte may be from a C10, who knows.

My plan is to buy correct spring clips. Find out where the holes should be located (maybe from an assembly manual???), then drill and install correct reproduction clips. Finally, re-install side moldings and install new reproduction tailgate band.......................BUT, I am open to suggestions!

Then she'll be perfect (or close enough!).
