87 5.3 motor placement question?
OK I made my own motor mount brackets to keep factory A/C and they moved to motor back 1 1/4". Then moved the slotted frame motor mounts all the way back that gave me 3/8" more from where my standard SBC was. I hooked up my Trans shell to made my trans mount and thought I would check my drive shaft length and I it came up 2" short!!!! I was running a 350 SBC and a 700R4 so how did I come up 2" short?? I thought from all the motor mount plates I saw it would move the motor back 1 3/4" I am only 1/8 short of that so how did I come up 2" short?? When got this truck nothing was right on the truck someone just throw crap together so I am not surprised that I am off. Do I need still need to move it back?? I put the fan on the motor and the fan shroud and the fan sat right where it should be. I am confused I will am some pic so maybe someone can help me out..

Re: 87 5.3 motor placement question?
Yea I would guess there is 4 or 5 inches between the intake and firewall. But a ls motor is shorter so if i move it back to the firewall the motor mount would sit completely off the frame pads. Right I have about 4" from the oil pan to the cross member. Just trying to is if the motor is sitting where it should be or if I need to move it back some more.

Re: 87 5.3 motor placement question?
I have been reading that for about 3 months now and a lot of other posts. Its ok I have already pulled the motor and I am going to move it back 2" more. That will make a total of 3 1/2" back that way I don't have to get a new drive shaft made. I have the metal and welder it's a lot cheaper for me to move it back anyway. And better because I will be moving more weight back.

Re: 87 5.3 motor placement question?
Well I pulled it and moved it back 2 1/4" more.. How I have moved it back a total of 3 3/4" but my drive shaft fits perfect now... That's as far as you can move a LSx motor back because you can't get a finger between the head and the firewall now... The Trans is in there tight now but still got room to get it in and out. Now for the bad my truck is lowered and it had a 1 1/2" to 2" rake with the sbc. Now with the LSx motor and moving it that far back the front sits higher than the back now.

Re: 87 5.3 motor placement question?
The front was lowered with 3" springs I was going to change all the lowering stuff anyway. Going spindles and airbag to the front and 4link and airbags in the back(one day)
