How do I adjust six cylinder valves other than running the engine? I changed the head gasket and want to get them close before trying to crank it.

Which 6 cylinder are we talking about? V-6 or inline?

straight six, I know how to do a V8 on an engine stand.

hydraulic lifters I presume- it's the same as a V8, rotate the engine until the lifter for that valve rocker is on the cam lobe base. Loosen the rocker nut, spin the pushrod with one hand while slowly tightening, when the lash is gone, then tighten the rocker arm nut 1/2 more turn and your done, move on to another valve.

A little trick -- since the V8 oil deflectors don't really work on the L6 rocker arms -- take a junkyard valve cover and cut the top out about 1/2" in from the rounded edge. This gives you access to the rocker nut from the top and oil does not get sprayed all over the engine bay. One junkyard gave me a spare L6 valve cover free when I bought a transfer case from them. A dinged up one works fine.
