67 Truck with a 69/70 Core Support...Help!

OK, I have a problem with my truck, the headlights just don't fit right. After a little research here on the forum I find out that I have a 68 truck with a 69-72(?) core support and that the headlights/buckets aren't fitting with my 68 grille. I am not going to change my fenders or my core support. I have read everything, but am still trying to make any sense of it all, so my question to the forum is:
What are my options for a grille in this truck?

Can I go with a GMC grille?
Can I use a 69/70 grille?
Do I need to make my own custom grille?

Arggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

Am I reading this right? Do you have 67-68 fenders and hood and a 69-72 core support?

You are correct, 67-68 fenders, hood and a 69-72 core support. The 68 grille does not work with the headlights.

It will have to be custom then, a 68 grill wont fit a 69-72 core support. The hood latch and center support are diffrent. Do the hood and fenders line up properly? do you have any pics of this?

Hood and fenders seem to align OK, big gap between the hood and the cowl, but the hood shuts and latches good. It appears that the headlight alignment seems to be the only thing out of whack. Maybe I can modify my 68 grille to clear the headlights, like trimming it enough to clear?

Re: 67 Truck with a 69/70 Core Support...Help!

Lemme guess, they stick out about an inch too far and are slightly off-center. You need to drill out the spot welds and remove the headlight standoffs from the core support. The early and late core supports are dimensionally identical other than these 'buckets' that are spot welded to them on the later trucks. The '67-'68 headlights mounted directly to the support. If you have an early '69 support, they have been known to still have the square holes for the headlights already stamped in them behind the buckets, otherwise you'll have to drill them yourself.

This is a pretty easy fix Good luck!

The headlights mount too far in towards the centerline of the truck and they are too high.
OK, so gringoloco, what you are telling me is that I can remove the 69/70 bucket mounts and the headlights will be able to mount directly to the core support in the 67-68 configuration?

Yep, That's what I have, the 69-70 core support. I am starting to understand that I can remove the 69/70 mounts and go back to the 67-68 mounting. This makes me feel better. Thanks Tmend for the pictures!

I didn't know the 67-68 core supts are the same as the 69-72 supts except for this little detail. So if I want to put a 67-68 front end on my 70, all I'll need to do is change the hood, grill, fenders and remove these light brackets. No changing out the core supt?

Do some more searching on here, I believe its not that simple to remove the 69-70 headlight bucket and bolt on the headlight, the opening is different and you have to cut it open a little bit and then still have to deal with headlight attachment point.

It can be done, but this is not a bolt in.

Re: 67 Truck with a 69/70 Core Support...Help!

I had read somewhere in the archives that I may have to use the 69/70 buckets to a certain extent to mount the 67-68 headlights. I shall approach this project carefully before cutting off any brackets or mounts. I kinda wish I could find a set of GMC headlight buckets and a painted GMC grille, I like the 4 head light look.

Re: 67 Truck with a 69/70 Core Support...Help!

OK, I pulled the grille out of the truck and it made it possible to adjust the headlights. So now I need to figure out how to make a grille for it. I think that I will convert to 4 headlights because I really dig that look. Here are pictures showing the mis-alignment of the headlights with the grille. Also I show the difference between the 68 and 69 headlight buckets, 68 on the left. The retainer rings appear to be different too, 68 on left. And a picture of the hoop located properly showing the mis-alignment. Oh well, I'll figure out something. Looks like I may have a perfect 68 grille for sale now.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][/IMG][/IMG][/IMG][/IMG][/IMG]
