POLL: Dashes...

Just want to get an Idea of what everyone's got out there on the Dash front. I Like the Simple clean look of 67-72 dashes. I have a stock "untouched" No A/C Dash, was tempted to put a stereo in but I think after realizing that you can't go back after cutting the Dash has made me wonder what others have or have done in the way of mods or finding other out-of-the-way places to put Tachs, CD Stereo's, and other do dads.

Post pics if ya got 'em too if ya like...especially for those of you with "hidden do dads" to keep a pretty stock look...

thanks

Brian

Thumbs up

Glad to hear you have a conscience! You're right, once it gets hacked that's it. Several around here think it's cool, but I think it's basically stupid. Custom Autosound makes several models of stereos that fit our dashes and look great, that's what I have and I love it, sounds great too! My tach is on the steering column, but I might consider putting it in the dash some day. I kind of like it where it is OK, so no big deal to me.

This one practically starts a war every time...

First off, cut it cleanly and save the pieces and you can go back.

Second...I'm not selling my truck, and honestly would MUCH rather have nice tunes for a decent price rather than either dealing with the craptastic original AM radio or shelling out the big bucks for an okay stock-looking unit...

I've got a column tach too. I think one of these days I'll replace the entire set of gauges with some real ones...

The only mod my uncle did to my truck when he had it was a fuzzy sticker of the "Play Boy Bunny" next to the ignition switch. The only mod I'm going to do is take the AC astro vents out to cut into them and install tweeters behind them...

well it all depends on whether you want to keep your truck original or not.. To me since my 68 C10 is a LWB but going to be converted to a SWB (either cutting the frame or buying a different frame) had a 292 6Cyl, 3 On Tree w/ Bench seat but it did have optional Guage package, Oil Pressure and Temp guages, Wood bed Floor (fleetside) and Overload springs... I did not care about cutting my dash for my stereo.. Since my truck did not have 292 Engine, or 3 Speed Tranny in it when I bought it.. It now has a 350 Small Block Chev, TH400 Trans, is going to get either Chev 40/60 Split Bench or GM Tahoe Bucket Seats or even Camaro Buckets.. 6 speed Floor swap (maybe) and have either a Short Stepside bed or Fleetside bed (not too sure at this point).. But if it was actually a 50th Anniversary 68 SWB, with 3 or 4 speed and 327, then I would have not cut the dash... Just my opinion though and I am not trying to start a war either..

L@tez,

Charlie

What's up with the Playboy Bunny and 67-72 trucks? Are we the pimps of the classic automobile world, or something? There was a Chrome likeness of him glued to the exterior of my drivers side vent window when I got my GMC, but fell off when I gave it a bath...but he's goin back on when I buy some superglue

As for the dash question, my dash is uncut. I got the truck with an Audiovox AM/FM/8-track player in the original hole even though it didn't fit. I took it out and threw all of it away except for the front panel, I am gonna glue it in as a "dummy" in the orig. radio hole, and glue the knobs over the round holes. I put my Pioneer CD player in the glovebox, and I have a remote control for it so I don't have to reach all the way across the cab when I'm drivin on the freeway. I never ride with passengers, so there's no one to complain about the glove box lid hitting their knees. The p/o installed a tach on the steering column, and I taped a digital clock/interior-exterior thermometer in the spot occupied by the center dash A/C vent in a/c trucks. Oh wait, there are the holes in the bottom of the dash the p/o used to attach an aftermarket ammeter, even tho the original one works fine...

My 67 has a cut non AC dash (previous owner) with a CD player. It also has a central metal panel under the dash heater controls with additional switches/warning lights for extra lighting (still to be fitted but these controls to meet UK legal requirments) and electric fan overide. This is painted black to match the original dash and is completely reversible, held on by the heater control screws.

It also has a fire extinguisher hung under the passenger side and an additional non matching voltmeter and clock in a little plastic panel under the drivers side (previous owner) as the original ammeter doesn't work (needs investigating). These will be moved/replaced at sometime with something more in keeping, maybe extending the central switch panel to incorporate them. I'll get some pics later today.

If you dont have a Super Rust Free Cheyenne Super Big Block truck,or some original low mile truck thats loaded with goodies i probably wouldnt cut it.But if you do you can always find a donor dash for the pieces you need to weld it back in,but a bit of work.If its a regular plane small block long box truck, with a decent cab i wouldnt hesitate,I myself would much prefer look at a nice modern CD player than a factory radio,or a overpriced looking custom made to fit tape deck.i have a a JVC tape deck in one of my trucks,no mods-i was going to add a cd changer in the console box.my other will have a radio delete and a underdash unit.but you can go back if you cut it,just will cost you some money, unless you know your way around a welder.

I like the simple clean dash...........

With all the advice from board members and the availability of aftermarket things today...........there's always another way of doing things without the damage of cutting things up.........

Even for a remote radio.

I think barn just said I was stupid? lol. I cut mine, love it. I had a Custom Autosound and it was crap, cut the dash, put in a Pioneer, love it. Same price for both by the way, except now I can play my CDs in the radio instead of fooling with a $300 changer.

My dash is un- hacked with a 20 yr old Pioneer with 2) 6 by 9 speakers in the doors!! Oh!! that just cut the the value!!! LOL!! Got a chrome Super Sun tach on the colume. As longs as it works I don't change it. If the stuff wasn't in the truck when I got it I would add a new Super Sun and a new Pioneer with 6 by 9's. LOL!!!

I am going to cut mine I want the truck to be mine the way I want it. So that means Snip Snip I personally hate the original radio's fake wood finish and Bomb behind the seat Some like original others like custom stuff so they are comfy when driving there old looking truck. There would be only one car company if we all like the same Car/Truck.

cleanly hacked

As some would say, I hacked my dash to pieces when I cut out just enough to slide a good Kenwood CD stereo into my dash. BEsides that, all I've done is add a custom instrument panel, a couple rocker switches to replace the big, ugly headlight switch and that's about it.

I was looking for something unique and the guy that made mine was gonna use it as a template and start marketing them. I wanted mine different, so I had him add the bowtie.

I'm running a column mounted tach and making a custom face panel to install 3 additional guages in the uncut radio hole. If I decide I need a radio it will go in an overhead console or in the glove box. Tunes are no big deal to me.

Bezel will likely be machined aluminum that holds the stock idiot gauges (yes, the idiot gauges). I'm having conversations with somebody about the machine work but if that doesn't work out, my alternate plan is to 'skin' the stock bezel so as to eliminate the mounting holes (studded instead), the holes for the light and wiper switches, and the texture on the face, then do a body color paint job on that. We'll see which way works out for me.
