What did you get done? 04/10 Masters Edition

I am not a golfer, but I had to watch some of the Masters. What an awesome piece of property they were playing on.

I worked in my yard when I wasn't running service calls. I picked up some new solar powered LED landscaping lights to accent the Spring updates. If I ever get my arbor project finished, I will post pics.

I did get a few minutes to go in my garage attic and dig out some parts needed for my grill conversion. I have almost everything I need except an NOS 350 emblem. If you see one on ebay let me know.

I put expensive 2 way JBL speakers in my truck...Then I realized I liked the cheaper 3 way phase linear speakers the JBL's replaced.

Re: What did you get done? 04/10 Masters Edition

I installed a new fuel filter and drove the dually round the block....still has this aggrevating random misfire. Going to a shop next...I didn't really think the fuel filter was going to cure it, it was just the last thing to do for basic tuning up.

Re: What did you get done? 04/10 Masters Edition

Fired up 305 on the test stand for the first time. Had a little trouble with the aftermarket starter - had to yank it off and install OE Delco. Afterward, 'broke the engine in' ~ 25 min between 2000 and 3000 RPM which did not make my old lady too happy (even with mufflers it was loud).

Got to change oil in the truck - next weekend.

Re: What did you get done? 04/10 Masters Edition

Well to start, went to work. Found out I had no work, left after 2 wasted hours. Got home and started to install trans in truck. Friend called and was having trouble with his water pump on his 2001 suburban. Took a break and went to help him change that. 1 hour later, back to trans install. Of course that was a lot of fun since I had to do it on my sloped driveway, but I still got it done. Getting close to firing it up now!

Re: What did you get done? 04/10 Masters Edition

Bought and completely tore down an '88 1-ton 4WD. I wanted the front stub and big transfer case, gave the guy $300 for the complete truck. No title, but the cab had been completely stripped which made cutting it up much easier. I chopped the frame just behind the torsion bar crossmember, makes it easier to roll around. I ended up with a rebuildable 454, TH400, transfer case, front diff, etc., 14-bolt full floater, wheel tubs for my hotrod project and a complete straight bedside. What's left goes to the recycler in about a half hour. Oh, sold the toolbox and headache rack for $100, passenger door and fender for another $100 and leaf springs and mounts for $75. I'm guessing I'll be in the black at the recycler.
All this fun with no help, other than my P.O.S. Harbor Freight come-along. It's staying at the recycler...

Re: What did you get done? 04/10 Masters Edition

Rebuilt the front end on my crew cab and added the 3" drop spindles. It looks better, but now I have to decide what to do in the rear. I have a flip kit, but i think that may be too much. Right now it has a drop shackle on the rear. I cant decide if I want to put the stock shackle on and do the flip...or leave the shackle and get a 2" drop front hanger..

During disassembley I also noticed that i have a tire on the front with the sidewall split about halfway around the tire. I guess I will be putting a pair of new tires on the front today while its at the shop getting an alignment.

Just move the stock hanger up, and drill new holes. Either that or get a Burb hanger, they are shorter.

Re: What did you get done? 04/10 Masters Edition

Well, this might very well be my first showing in one of these threads, as I haven't had much opportunity to work on the truck for quite some time. My task Saturday was to pull the window track from my trucks driver door, to use it in my salvage yard replacement. Original door was rusting to the point that the handle felt as if it woudl pull thru, and the door latch had frozen up on me again, and was keeping the orig door from latching closed.

Wish I had pictures, but was too focussed on actually being sure to COMPLETE the job, didn't take the time to document it well. In a nutshell , steps followed:

Bare door shell I scored from the salvge yard. Had previously primed and painted with Rustoleum and a roller, using a gloss brown that looked like a real good match on the can label. (more on that later)

Had a salvaged wing vent window, as well as door glass. Had a new weatherstrip/seal purchased via JCWhitney a long time ago.

Swapped over my lock cylinder, connected the handle actualtor rod, installed the rear glass guide channel, and then fought with the glass for quite a while to get it connected to the operator in the door. This almost made me give up i was having an awful time getting the rollers in proper place. Finally succeded by putting the rear one in first, then moving the glass around and running the operator up and down several times until I got it lined up and popped into place. Had the back half of the weather seal in place at this time.

Worked the wing vent into place, and fed the wether seal down along that, and secured the frame, along with the rear-view mirror. Looked like a door at that point, time to unbolt the old one from the truck.

Left the hinges attached, and removed the 6 bolts that held the door to the hinge. this reduced the amount of work realigning the door to the cab/fenders.

now I have a solid virtually rust-free door on the one side at least. Wing vent works, where my old one had rusted and fell out. Window slides up and down nice and smooth thanks to the new seals. lock works, and latch works. door closes a little hard, but will go nice if I slam a little harder.

Found out that the color is very different. probably since my OE metallic brown has weathered so bad, and since I have a straight gloss brown non-metallic. the new paint looks like melted milk chocolate. Future plans this summer are to slap a quick and dirty coat over the rest of the truck, pretty much hiding the flaws and rust, in effort to buy some time before the whole thing rots away on me.

Celebrated my success with a few cold beverages, and didn't get anything else done for the day, LOL!

Re: What did you get done? 04/10 Masters Edition

WooHoo, $155 for the remainder of the junked truck, now I'm well in the black on this part-out. I still have the recently rebuilt TH400, BW4401 transfer case and 1-ton IFS front end to weld onto my shortwide project truck.
It's amazing how you can keep the costs of these things down if you're willing to hustle parts and work hard.

I validated my purchase decision by surprising both myself and a number of autocrossers by hooning the truck in a well controlled manner amongst a bunch of sports cars.

I have adapters for the rear and redrilled rotors for the front, but only have the adapters on at the moment to see what they look like. The dodge wheels are 5x5.5" bolt pattern.

They should be off a Mid-2000's Ram 1500. At least when I was looking at them that is what they were marked as.
