We go to the sandblasting supply place and it costs us about $7.00 per bag, we rust started using walnut shells about $15.00 per bag for body parts and they can be reused. If you will put a tarp down u can reuse the sand and walnut shells.

I have had the best luck using "Back Diamond" from Tractor Supply. It is about 20 bucks for a small bag but well worth it. This stuff won't kill you like other stuff will. I still use a good mask always.

Black Diamond sucks ... too aggressive profile. We have to powdercoat prime a heavy coat anytime we deal with Black Diamond. It would not be my first choice.

I've been paying 7 bucks a bag for it at my Tractor Supply.

my dimwit brother inlaw used playsand from a local mining operation he was some proud o the money he saved over the sterile blasting sand// the poor 58chevy he "restored" rusted to the ground in 18months due to the high salt content in the playsand on long island// but he did after all save about $30 doing the job

Thats a hard lesson that will keep being learned first hand by some reading this here.
You can buy REAL sand blasting sand at almost any equipment rental compoany such as United rentals. I picked up something like a 100# sack for 6 bucks.

Re: small sandblasting qustion i need to ask

I've used Home Depot sand on a truck frame and it worked great. I don't remember what it was called but it wasn't play ground sand, and I don't think is was for concrete mix either. It was probably medium corse and all uniform in shape (not a mix size of sand grains). It didn't stick or clog in the high humidity that I used it in.

Re: small sandblasting qustion i need to ask

Do walnut shells do a good job at rust removal??? Do they leave any kind of residue on the metal? How do you clean it after wards??

Re: small sandblasting qustion i need to ask

walnut wont remove rust. hardeware store sand is a crap shoot as salt content unknown, moisture content unknown, and the stuff is usually tumbled to git it smooth

sand for balsting it sterile dry and has sharper edges for better cutting while blasting and does a far better job // check at autopaint suppliers, big tool rental places, masonay suppliers but get screened bagged blasting sand for bestest results

Re: small sandblasting qustion i need to ask

playsand will work.. but as said wear a mask ,and not one of those paper throw away ones..
if you live local to a landscape surply (mulch/dirt and SAND)
it be cheaper than by the bag.. keeping the sand or whatever you use dry is the biggest issue..
