How to paint front fender emblems?

Greetings,

Just joining the gang and need some help. I recently picked up a Chevy 1969 C-20 Custom Camper with a 350 CI engine and TH400 transmission in 12/2010. The truck is mostly originial except for the wheel rims. It came with A/C and cruise control. My goal is to make this truck a daily driver and keep the original look.

My question is how can I repaint the front fender emblems? This truck has the Custom Camper/20 emblems and the 8 350 emblems. The chrome is in great shape with little to no pitting on the emblems. Is there a easier way to paint the recessed lettering areas with black paint and keep the raised lettering with the chrome surface? Appreciate any help in this area for a professional paint job. I do have a siphon paint spray gun and a hobby spray gun to apply the paint.

Rick

I usually take them out, get a touch up pen at a parts store and use it to fill in the lettering with black, just gotta be careful to get the paint to level out

I use testors model paint with soft brush, then clean any that get on what you don't want, use a little thinner on rag like old t-shirt,then put a little on the rag, then use finger behind the rag & rub lightly,it should come off

Re: How to paint front fender emblems?

I saw in a magazine once where they did this with a needle, dip your needle in paint then put it into the low painted spot and let the paint flow off and level. patience and a steady hand. never done it myself. not an easy job but details pay off in the end

Re: How to paint front fender emblems?

things like that i use expensive artist camelhair brushes and heavy quality enamel like "one shot" and put a few coats on to build it up

^x2 one shot is good stuff. dont use testors model paint. one shot will smooth out nicely.
A little patina never hurt. you might just want to leave it alone

Re: How to paint front fender emblems?

I have shakey hands so when I painted the ones on my old truck, I put a bunch of elmers glue all over the face... then used a safety pin the scrape it off the sides and clean the edges, then I pained the sides... once it was dry I just buffed all the glue off..lol

Re: How to paint front fender emblems?

Appreciate all the advice so far. Great forum!

I plan on documenting the process for others to review and will submit the whole process when completed.

So far, I have removed the emblems from the left side. Best way to remove the emblems is to unbolt the inner fender. I just let the inner fender rest on the front tire and reached in with a 8-inch long box-ended 3/8" wrench and removed the emblem nuts.

I'm leaning towards applying a "liquid mask" on the raised areas of the emblems similiar to a painter's trisket with latex or the Elmer's glue. Grease could be the other option. I definitely want to go for a sprayed-on finish with the best chance for an even-layered coat of paint. Thanks again for all the great tips!

Re: How to paint front fender emblems?

My '63 fender emblem.
Done with masking tape and a sharp, fresh razor knife.,then sprayed.
any leak through can be cleaned up with lacquer thinner and a rag(as RC suggested).
I didn't think the factory red would look very good with yellow, and yellow would tend to make it blend in,so white to match my grill and bumper was my choice.
