I had recently bought this 1970 GMC Sierra Grande LB in January with the plan to haul around band equipment. My initial intention was to put a tonneau cover for security, but I got this 1973 Vacationeer Camper top instead.

My truck had a slide-in camper which I did not want. It did serve to keep the woodbox in pretty good condition though, and that was what I wanted to continue doing. I found this guy selling this one from a 1973 GMC Sierra Grande 454 108,000 miles; both purchased new in 1973 by the original owner. The new owner who got this '73 GMC did not like the look of the Camper Top/cap/shell.

His wood box was in awesome condition and I have included some pics of this exchange from one generation to another, or if you will or, a hand-me-down.
I like the look, and feel it gives my truck a retro-type look as well as keeping the woodbox in it's present state; Old Guy maybe, but das me. HenryJ

Here are some more pics of the Top...Only took three of us to move it over.
It has tempered glass all around and sliding side-windows. Also the back window opens like an old garage door. Visibilty is quite good.

Last few pics...the holes on the sides; front and back, were for a boat rack.
I have no plans to connect the two. I just recently installed the original back window which had been off and connected to the original slide-in camper. I like being able to reach between and clean the windows. You can see the top does not stick up very much over the top of the cab.
If anyone has info on these Vacationeer tops or this company; flyers or promo ads, please let me know. Thanks for lookin...HenryJ

I love the "old man" look. I try to always have a vintage topper for every truck I own. I even have one in stock for a longhorn.

Yes, the '73 this topper came out of and the picture IS representative of what the entire bed looked like. The original owner had layers of old newspaper on the bed and covered it with some carpet.

Here's a pic of my woodbox and how it looked when I got it this past January. I also found a date code of (9 69)...pretty sure that's what it is...
I'd at least like to maintain this. So yes....I enjoy the Wood!

Welcome to the board Robert! I would put my truck on Craigslist first as it is free to list there. If you become a subscribing member here ($25 a year) you can also post here in the trucks for sale section.

I would keep it registered as a commercial vehicle, that way if there are ever any retroactive smog laws enacted, you will still be exempt.

As far as registration, it only cost me $15 dollars to register. Somehow the nice lady at triple AAA got the impression I was a family member of the original owner?!...hmmnnn, I wonder how?

Seeing the C-clamps securing your topper, can I recommend these? They look cleaner and don't loosen up like C-clamps. My topper is not era correct like yours, but I'm much happier since I upgraded to these.

Yes those clamps were only
temporary. I did purchase the
exact ones you pictured and
they make for a cleaner install.
I have 5 per side. Keep the volume
cranked to 10 and thanks for the heads

Nice find! And two really cool California get outta town trucks. I'd love to find a period correct topper for my '72. Years ago I had a Winnebago one with woodgrain strip and dark bubbled and one jalousey (crank out slats) window on each side. The hatch had a bubble window,too,and it was paneled/insulated...and heavy! Yours is cool with an overhead-type door. That's gotta add some weight. How does she ride now? Better?

As I recall the, the ride was bouncy with nothing in the back. Now with the added weight of the topper, it does seem to be smoother.
SpecialK, I know you have lots of auto literature; got any on these Vacationeers?
