The rearend! I hit the road yesterday following a friend in a laid out 95 silverado. We were headed to the Tex Mex car show. Around 80 miles out I hear howling that turned to crunching, a puff of smoke then I stopped moving. Out in the middle of Texas country on hwy 290. I look under the truck and see the drive shaft turning and gear oil splattered everywhere..damn.

A nice farmer stopped to help and later pulled me into his yard. I sat there for 6 hrs waiting for friends with a car hauler to come get me.

The rearend was the only thing I failed to touch during my frame off build. Ironically I was looking at an Eaton unit just last week. Oh well, looks like that posi unit will come sooner than expected.

It's nice to live in a state where hospitality and the 'help thy neighbor' attitude still means something. I had 3 three stop to ask if I needed help. My neighbor in Austin borrowed a truck then rented a car hauler from Uhaul to drive 90 miles to get me. The farmer bought me lunch and sat with me for 6 hrs. Thank God for good people!

Wow what a cool story and a very nice truck. That is what I miss most about living in Texas the people are the nicest around.

truck looks great....here in south florida you would still be waiting for someone to stop. 90% of the people here could care less about everyone else.

If that happened to you in Jersey, you'd be posting this from your cell phone right now. Even a truck as sweet as yours, all they see is old. Unless you were extremely lucky and someone like us rode by. Try getting help on the side of the road with a blown air line on a primered and bodied dually while half of you consists of ink and metal.

Sorry for the bad luck but at least it ended way better than it could have. It's really cool to hear these rare good samaritan stories. Im interested to see what the inside of that pumpkin looks like

Glad things sorta worked out. Rear end and Power Steering boxs are the two items everyone takes for granted. I encourage everyone to pop the rear cover and have a look at least and change the gear oil. Maybe what rolled off the assy line is still inside. Never know if it sat submerged in mud or water.

When I pull the cover I will post a pic of what I find. Is there a chance the differential housing is shot too??

sorry to hear about your truck neighbor, hopefully the housing is still ok just depends on what exploded inside. You had mentioned getting an Eaton posi thats the way I would go if I were you. The Auburns are ok, but unless they have changed the design they are not rebuildable. Good luck with it.

Sorry to hear about your trouble on the road, I was looking it my truck last week and decided I needed to pull the rear and clean, paint and replace brgs, seals, bushings springs, ect..... Mine has sat around for a few years and I just figured I didn't want to take the chance. After reading your post I feel even more strongly about pulling it. Good to hear you found some friendly folks to help, here in Va you would be likley to run into good people that would stop and help too. I think it's a southern hospitality thing!!
