Hatch latch lock

I just bought a 72 2wd. There is no key for the lock on the rear hatch. Can I have it re-keyed? If not, where can I get a replacement handle? Right now it is stuck in the open position.

Re: Hatch latch lock

Have you contacted a locksmith to see if they can do anything? I'm going to have to figure something out too.

Re: Hatch latch lock

Just recently replaced my hatch handle with one from Lowes, screw holes matched perfect, had to cut square shaft off about 2 inches and drill hole for cotter pin, all for about 8 bucks. Unless you have a original handle in perfect shape its not hardly worth calling a locksmith, bet they wont do it for 8 bucks!

Re: Hatch latch lock

I'm in a similar boat with my latch.. never had a key when I bought it, and I know of at least twice the ignition switch was changed. once by me and once by PO. he said he never had a key either. lol But he did put a clasp and a padlock on it... uggg I tried a canopy shop a few years back and there was always one thing on thier T-handles that wouldn't work.. I been thinking I may try an enclosed trailer shop see if they can come up with a pop-up handle or maybe a lockable fold down T-handle. Even if a have to mod things a bit. it's better than a clasp and padlock. I dout my OE t-handle is worth re-keying anyhow.

Re: Hatch latch lock

I took one to 2 different locksmiths and they both said based on the way the lock was incased near impossible to make a key for. Garage door handle works fine

Re: Hatch latch lock

Hi, new to the board. I got a key and handle from Golden State Trucks some years ago for my 71. Was missing the latch rod bracket but I got that from ebay. Gordon
