so i tried getting the wiper arms to come off so i can remove the cowl panel and they didn't budge, so i stopped before fudging something up. can anyone tell me how these blasted things are supposed to come off?

lift your wiper up where it flex's and attaches to the truck. there is a little lever under the round area that you may need to push up with a small screw driver while you pull it towards you and away from the truck... they can be a pain thats for sure.

The easiest way is to use the tool made for removing wiper arms. The tool is available at most parts stores and is not that expensive. The little tin clip that is under the arm will not stop the removal so you don't have to address it.

I can post a pic if you have trouble finding the tool.

Here is how you remove wiper arms on our trucks.

1. Get on the Google and type in "Snap-on A192".
2. The first hit is a Snap-on web page where you can order Snap-on tool number A192.
3. Click "Add To Cart".
4. Click "Checkout".
5. Wait for A192 in the mail.
6. Remove wiper arm the proper way with the proper tool and never scratch up your cowl again.

Same tool works on 1971 and 1972 Chevelle wiper arms too.

This tool belongs in EVERYBODY'S tool box next to the window crank/inside door handle five dollar horse shoe clip remover tool.

Kinda like a distributor wrench. Yes there are other ways to get by but until you have the correct tool you don't know how easy it can be.

I just used the claws on a hammer, worked good, but then I'm not worried about scratching paint.

I have this tool and it looks so simple but works like a dream.

You can get said tool, or you can remove that tab with a small screw driver by pulling down on it. You don't need the tab to keep the wiper arms on. With the tabs removed you can then devote your anger towards removing the wipers, have fun, they can be a pain in the ***

I used a set of channel locks to GENTLY remove my arms after poping the release under the arm

In 15 years of owning these truck I've never used a special tool. The thought of a special tool never even crossed my mind and I've fought with many wipers. Damnit...why didn't I think of googling it?!?

exactly my thoughts on this. why spend money where you can just go and bend an old screw driver to do exactly the same thing.. either way they are a pain to get off..elbow grease will need to be used IMO

I bought this thing many years ago (1988 or so). I recently found it still wrapped in its original sealed bag with some stuff I had stored. It took me a couple of tries, but once I figured it out, piece of cake. Better than anything else I ever used to get the bloody (#^!%@*@&^) arms off. I just looked at LICS http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~partsort it is still six bucks.

I ordered this Snap-On wiper removal tool ($10) and the first time I used it I realized how ridiculous it is to use a screw driver and pry against the cowl. This should be in the FAQ.

Today I'll order a Snap On wiper removal tool. After pulling one tab out completely during a raging fit, mine still did not come off. The 4.5 inch cut off wheel easily removed the wiper arms. I'll have to pay for my fit when I buy new wiper arms. Thanks for the tip!

An old rag works great for the crank/door handle. I think I learned that from one of fastwillie 696969's posts.

The door spring compressor tool for the later style hinges belongs in this list as well!

That said thanks for the info on the snap on tool. I've fought these stupid things a few times and even come close to the cut off wheel myself!

Whats the door compressor tool do. Work for a 71?

No the later hinges (73+) have a spring that stops the door in the different positions. In order to swap the pins and bushings the spring has to come out and it can be a real pita.

I took mine off with a bottom keeper to a u bolt for exhaust lol believe it or not it worked.
