Re: Converting from 4 spd to 5 spd...What do I needd??
Here are some previous posts and some options. Many ways to skin the cat on this one.
Trans options - - T5 (world class with S10 tailshaft (i.e. forward shifter location is recommended to clear the bench seat if you have it)). Its weakness is, well, its weakness - generally speaking, it's only rated up to about 300-ish hp. Some rebuilders claim it can handle 350, but I'm a little skeptical. If this is for your blown small block - don't bother. - TKO 500 0r 600 - if this is for your blown small block, 600 might be more appropriate - it's the hp rating of the trans. - Keisler just put out a brand new 5-speed, available in 500 and 600 hp capable versions that are similar to the TKO, but with many improvements. Price is about the same you'd pay for a new TKO or slightly less - might be worth looking into. - one more option is a Muncie overdrive 4-speed, but I'm not sure how popular these are - would seem to be a larger rpm drop between shifts than a 5/6 speed. This is essentially a Muncie 2.20 1st gear (i.e. close ratio) 4-speed with a 0.85:1 4th gear (vice 1:1). Over to you if it works for you - and caution shifter location if bench seat. - Clutch / pp options are purely your preference - but if for your hot rod, would want to buy based on intended use. Me, I just buy a heavy duty street application and that seems to work. - as for linkage, most, if not all, 5/6 speeds use a rail type shifter mechanism, i.e. no linkage - but you do have to be careful regarding shifter location - camaro/mustang are too far aft for bench seat trucks - thus the S10 tailshaft comment above). THe muncie uses stock rods/arms, etc. Here are some useful refs/threads: CWT's excellent T5 conversion thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=408694 GREAT info/conversion thread from Brad: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=313954 T5 vs Tremec discussion thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=1#post4220832 Car Craft Magazine T5 article: http://www.carcraft.com/howto/116_06...ion/index.html TKO specs and gear ratios: http://www.hurst-drivelines.com/inde...les&Itemid=161 5-speed conversion thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=212959 Hyd Clutch/slave cylinder thread, if interested: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=300087 TR65's Stick Relocation thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=300892 Manufacturers: Kit Options from Hurst Driveline Conversions (used to be Classic Chevy 5-speed, I think) (this is the most complete kit for our trucks I've seen - 1st thread shows the 3 kit options, b ut you can mix/match what you want/need. 2nd thread is the 60-66 C10 details list): http://www.hurst-drivelines.com/inde...110&Itemid=110 http://www.hurst-drivelines.com/inde...ons&Itemid=142 D&D Perf (5/6 speed trans vendor): http://www.ddperformance.com/ Novak Hyd Clutch (slave cyl) retrofit kits: http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kit_hcr3.htm Keisler: http://www.keislerauto.com/ Overdrive Mucnie 4-speeds: http://www.m-22.com/m22/ Last edited by jocko; 04-23-2011 at 08:41 AM. |

Re: Converting from 4 spd to 5 spd...What do I needd??
I was going to swap out the 250/4 speed for a all aluminum LH6 5.3L and a T-5 in the 1964 SWB truck.
What kind of HP rating does the S10 T5 have? Thanks for the reply also. |

The regular t5 is only rated for something like 280hp. Only the world class t5 got a higher rating. They were never put in a full size truck from the factory and they broke a lot even behind a 6cyl in a s10. I would overlook the t5 and find something else if you want something that will last behind any sort of power whatsoever.

Re: Converting from 4 spd to 5 spd...What do I needd??
concur - I'd only consider even a wc t5 for a completely stock engine - and one that you never planned to honk on. if ya don't meet those criteria, I'd pass also.
Hey, dumb question - when threads get "moved" how does one know where they go? Now obviously this one got moved to the trans section, but then I see it's got new posts to it. So am asking to understand how this works - if it's moved - and people post in the section it was moved to - do the changes still show up here? If so, then why not just let the thread grow in both places? Or why not at least state where it's moved to and/or provide a hyperlink to the relocated thread? Am asking because (#1 it took a long time to generate the above answer) and #2, at least for me, since I tend to hang out primarily on the 60-66 side of the house - when I see "moved" on a thread posted here, I tend to not bother going to look for it elsewhere and figure it was "generic" enough to be moved. While this thread can apply to many other trucks, much of the info regarding fitment was specific to 60-66's, that's why I'm thinking that if a somewhat generic transmission thread that has specific as general info is posted - it might be cool to duplicate the thread, not move it. For the moderators - I'm only asking for clarification because I just don't quite understand all the voo doo that yoo doo so well. And you do - you all do a super job and I personally really appreciate it! So pls dont take these questions as a complaint - they aren't that at all - I'm just asking. Thanks! |

Re: Converting from 4 spd to 5 spd...What do I needd??
Hey, I think I just answered my own quesiton - I see this thread now exists on "eng and drivetrain" yet it still exists in 60-66 section (except there is no way to tell on the top level listing in the 60-66 section how many hits a thread is getting - that bit of info is removed.
I GET IT! In that case - my ONLY question would be this - is there a better way to still show the # of posts when this (or any) thread is being displayed on the original section so that folks know at a glance if it's worth a second look (i.e. in the current arrangement - there's know way to know if a thread that has been moved is getting lots of hits unless it's opened or if you go the new home forum. Either way - I better understand how it works now - thanks and it's fine as is - I learn something new every day... Last edited by jocko; 04-23-2011 at 03:00 PM. |

Re: Converting from 4 spd to 5 spd...What do I needd??
basically its to save server space. these kinda boards take up a lot of server space and it gets costly to upgrade to larger servers. and a lot of times they get moved to subject specific sub-forums to get more visibility on certain issues, like this one. not everyone lurks in all the sub-forums. so its best for the board and the OP. hopes this helps jocko
