anyone used expanding foam in there cab ???
As we all know our trucks were not built like modern trucks and they are noisy on the inside I have thought about using expanding foam insulation in the cab! has anyone done or tried this before ??

Re: anyone used expanding foam in there cab ???
I have never tried this but someone said they used white RV roof sealant as a noise barrier and for insulation. Any feedback on this? Thanks

Re: anyone used expanding foam in there cab ???
the new cars come with foam in the body cavities for sound proofing. Foam comes in many formulas. what you buy at the store(Great Stuff by Dow Chemical and others) is not made for vehicles. You have to get the correct product, so many times people buy the wrong stuff and say it does not work or is a crappy product. Most times its miss used. The new vehicles have better coatings on the parts and properly applied they work. The correct foam has virtually 0 absorption but you won't find it over the counter at most stores. These trucks do not have the rust preventive treatment inside like the newer vehicles. If you want to try it reply and I can get the correct product number however it applys to new properly treated metal. I feel like doing a test now on the correct foam with untreated metal like these trucks and see what the results are.
IMPAXX is a dow product that the oem use in the new cars added the correct stuff absolutely does not warp panels. if it does you are uisng the incorrect product Last edited by mbgmike; 04-25-2011 at 06:28 PM. Reason: added |

Re: anyone used expanding foam in there cab ???
Along with the possible rust issues others mentioned, don't underestimate the force that stuff produces when it expands. I had a buddy of mine spray it in the trunk lid of a very nice Cutlass, and it warped it beyond repair. It did stop it from rattling though (loud stereo), but I wouldn't try it on the roof of my truck.

Re: anyone used expanding foam in there cab ???
HAHA, one of my brothers does this. He drives rusty 73-78 chevy trucks, fills the holes in the floors and rockers with spray foam and closes the door.....instant weather strip. Just be sure to spray some WD-40 on the bottom of the door or the foam will stick and get ripped out when you open it!! It does work but i would never use the stuff on any of my trucks, it does cause rust! Joseph

Nope how would you put it between the roof panels?? the only way I see to insulate and sound proof the roof is to use some kind of "LIQUID" that will dry and fill the space. Ive even thought about using the "do it yourself bedliner" just turn the cab upside down and pour it in ! you would have to be able to move the cab around to make it cover evenly, sounds kinda silly and I dont know how well it would "bond" to the cab without prep. there has " GOT " to be SOMETHING that can be used WITHOUT causing rust

Re: anyone used expanding foam in there cab ???
Dynamat on the inner roof panel will quiet it down considerably. When I did my interior I put it on every surface that would be covered by panels, headliner or carpet. The inside looked like an explosion in a Reynolds Wrap factory but it kills the noise just fine!

Re: anyone used expanding foam in there cab ???
SWAMP RAT thanks for the links I read through them all then did some research here is what I have found out DO NOT use open cell foam it will act like a sponge and let moisture become trapped thus causing rust CLOSED CELL foam will work as long as the brand you choose DOES NOT have a corrosive base "where is a chemist when ya need one" ADHESION the product must " STICK" to bare metal EXPANDABILITY " DONT use a foam that expands more than 2 times its liquid state' there are foams that do not expand but they take alot longer to cure " up to 8 hrs per cubic inch.
NOW that I have done the research Im going to experiment I have a friend who has a 69 cab that the bottom is BAD CANCER but from the body line up is real good, I talked with him and we are going to use CLOSED CELL NON EXPANDING FOAM and turn the cab upside down fill the roof area and see what happens! Ill let ya know how it comes out, we may even wait a while then cut the roof and see what it looks like COOP

Re: anyone used expanding foam in there cab ???
I think aside form the moisture concerns there is a thread of it expanding too much and having no place to go so it ruins the cab, good thing you have a test piece!
EDIT: I believe in one of the threads somebody was going to give it a try and never came back with the results, if ya find that post (if its in one of the threads i posted) i'd probably PM him to see how it turned out.

Re: anyone used expanding foam in there cab ???
If it were me, I would Dynomat it and install a headliner. Seems like a lot of work to keep an exposed steel roof.
Another option is Lizard Skin.

Re: anyone used expanding foam in there cab ???
Ya dont do it. My son's truck has this foam in every cavity of his hood. Its starting to break down, probably from the heat. Its a mess! Probably holding moisture too. We'll take some time and pick it out slowly but surely. I'm even thinkin' about getting a new hood because of it....we'll see how it goes. PO probably thought it works great around his pipes in his house so why not....
This proves there really isn't a dumb question, huh? |

Re: anyone used expanding foam in there cab ???
OK guys let me clear this up I am NOT using the spray foam that you get had the lumber yard or hardware store Im going to use a commercial CLOSED CELL, NON EXPANDING foam that is made for automotive use (READ MY LAST POST) right now I am researching products made by 3M, DOW,and DUPONT once I find the RIGHT product (THE ONE THAT I FEEL MOST COMFORTABLE WITH) I am going to experiment on a old cab first
One thing that concerns me right now is PREP these products seem to suggest that for these to work right prep is important and there is NO way to prep inside the roof panels. does anyone know what, if anything GM did to the metal that wasnt exposed did they use any kind of coating or inhibitor on them ?
