the wife's got one bigger than mine!

Im fairly new to the 73-87 section of the forum. my wife just got herself a new truck. Its a 88 GMC Crew. She's been wanting her own truck for a while now,. but we have to haul kids and grand kids around still, so we wanted a four door. I bought her a four door chevelle but that didnt work out. So we started looking for a crew cab, that she could make her own. Well we found one this past weekend. As soon as we saw the ad on craigslist we knew it was the one. it is identical to my 86 except for being twice as big. It is the same color, same grill, same ugly nasty interior, even the dash is cracked in the same places

Her's

Mine

Some of her major plan's are to make this a short bed. I took a long bed and made it a short bed on my 70, by cutting the floor and buying new bed sides.
but Im not sure on the 73-87's is this how it is being done, or can you section the bedsides, if you guys could point me in the right direction I would certainly appreciated it.
Also are the interiors in the crew cab and suburban interchangeable? like door panles, plastic trim, glass that sorta thing?
and one more question are the 88-91 crew cabs/ 1tons, concidered The R/V series or The C/k series.

Thanks for your help and we cant wait to get started on it.

I believe the door panels and glass to be interchangeable, and some of the plastic may be. But I think the pieces around the headliner from the behind the A pillar piece are different.

As far as making it a short bed, you should be able to find a bed relatively cheap and save yourself some time and money.

The Easy way is to buy a short bed. Cut 14 inches out of the frame just after the front bed mount holes and 5-6 off the rear.

Yes everything but seats!

They are the R/V series

Re: the wife's got one bigger than mine!

Why dont the seats fit. do they not line up for the bolt holes, or are they to tall, or to short. is that the case for front and rears. i only ask because i was going to buy this local suburban and use its interior, if i could.

Re: the wife's got one bigger than mine!

the floor pan is different under the suburban front and rear seat compared to the crew cab...you could probably make the suburban front seats work if you highly modified the risers...people have done it before...they wont just bolt up though...and the rear seat is going to be too narrow...the suburban seat sits between the rear wheel wells the your crewcab doesnt have inside...also, one other thing that I can think of that wont crossover is some of the headliner trim...the front A pillar and rear C pillar trim and the front windshield and rear window trim will work out of a truck...the side B pillar trim will work out of a suburban, but a crew cab has a short 5-6 inch extension piece that will need to be used...the front A pillar and front windshield trim is the same for every model of the same year...

Nice find, that's awesome that both trucks match. You don't come across that everyday. You're lucky Elkhart is too far north for me to be browsin that section of CL.

Looks good from here. Take a look in our 73-87 Project Forum and you will find a LOT of CC/SWB conversions have been built. There is a good write up in our FAQ forum covering how to properly shorten the frame.

BTW- What happened to the 4dr Chevelle?

There is nothing this far north thats not rotted out. I had to go just north of Cincinnati, to find it. it was just shy of a 5 hour drive

I will definitely do that. The chevelle got sold to a gentleman who use to drive one just like it in high school, same color and everything. it really was a nice car for the money

Nice find!! Ya got me thinking. Instead of buying a crewcab in a few years, I'll get one of these and install a 5.3 in it.
